Hi Guys

Previously I owned a diesel GQ patrol which was stolen a while ago. i'm now looking at getting another 4wd with only having a budget of 10k i have come across a 60 series landcruiser. the specs are:
1988
2h diesel
210,000km
air con
bull bar
and no rust that i could find (roof, doors, gards)
owner is after $4-5k

is this about right? Also, i think it's a base model because of the rear barn doors and vinyl all the way through but it's got twin square headlights. is this right or has it had a front end replacement? being a base model, will it have and LSD?

any help would be greatly appreciated as i am new to toyotas once being a Nissan man (may be converted...).

it will be slow like your gq, but hard to kill like your gq.

its main killer is the leaf springs set up compared to the coils under a gq.

if it does have a lsd it wont do much as its a toyota (they just doint work well unlike the nissan ones).

They have massive issuesd with rust in the roof sills, so check it with a magnet ensure no didgy repairs will come back to haunt you.

but if it really has no rust, and those k's are very low, so it could be a good truck.

but personally for 10g's if you can find a pootrol on diesel again thats the way i would go.

I have an 80 and a 60. The lift pump in the 80 has just shit itself so have started driving the 60 again. The 12HT feels quicker than the 1HZ and the ride feel superior to the coils in the 80.

Hi Guys

Thanx for the replies.

I have a 10k limit to buy a 4wd and mods (i.e. 2" lift, 33" tyres, better bull bar and snorkel) this is why i am wanting to buy the 60 series because it's a low buy in priced 4wd. i also think it would be hard to get a GQ in such good condition, low k's and diesel.

I enjoyed driving the 60 series crusier, it's a bit more truck like than the GQ but that's what i liked about it.

Also, there was a black puff of smoke on start up but not whilst running. What could this be? injectors??? if so, how much would this cost to fix?

New injectors about $400 I think I paid. Sounds like a good buy with low klms, triple check the rust tho. Roof gutter in rear half. Rear wheel arches and rear quarter panels. On my third 60 now, all have been terrific cars, cheap to look after, basic and did I mention cheap.

Black smoke in your case is more likely glow plugs not heating properly in my opionion.

Will i have any trouble fitting 33" with a 2" lift? And how much would glow plugs cost to fix?

It could be worth searching for an 80 series.
for under 10k you would find something with all the lift, tyres, bullbar etc already on it. plus aircon and coil suspension etc.
petrol ones are selling for around 5-6k diesel a bit more

33s with a 2" lift will be fine.

Not sure about glow plugs.

i think i will go with the 60 series becaues i'm going to use it for work and play in the bush. Plus, if i damage or scratch the body i won't be too concerned as i would with an 80 series >. I like buying my cars as close to stock as possible so i can do the mods i want. buying stock also indicates to me the car hasn't had a hard, off road life. The mrs and i will be getting a comfy car too for touring (jackaroo)...

we also just bought our first home and the bank has jacked up our deposit 3k :bad-words: so the budget is more like 6-7k now for the vehicle. so the 60 series is looking more the better deal for us now.

hey, i checked if it had air con and it does. i think it needs a re-gas though becaues it was cool not cold.

One thing i was hoping to hear though was if it is a base model is it normal to have twin square headlights or would this be an addition? most stock standard cars i have seen have the circular head lights a part from the saharh's...

Doesn't sound too expensive, but doesn't sound too cheap either.

I got mine with Turboed 2H, front/rear/side bars, luggage racks, draw system and a few other goodies for 4k.

Number one rule in buying a car... be patient.

twin square lights on a 88 model is standard they are actually a 62 series
03 TJ sport skyjacker/warn stuff and some bling :) - been around Jeeps before, this is my 1st,

re the black smoke on startup. It's more likely over injection. the 2h does this when starting to assist cold starts. I wouldn't worry about it.
It could also be caused by putting your foot on the accelerator when starting, which you don't need to do.

glow plugs would be white smoke, and hard starting.

most sellers bump up there price to negate offers,eg if they want 3 grand they may put it up for 4,theres plenty of 60s out there,some better than others,doesnt hurt to shop around,i love the 60 series,good old trucks

weve had my 60 series 2 in the family for around about 15 or so years, my old man bought it new and made a few mods . side steps, side bars, bullbar, custom susp, 2" lift, kaymar spare wheel rack. this thing has been serviced every 5-10000kms and is still kickin on strong. it came with the square headlights. it puffs a bit of smoke on start up and under heavy load (guessing from old engine)
is it a turbo?
mines just naturally asperated and she loses some speed.
im about to try and max the lift the springs will go and put 35" baja claws on. also put 3" body blocks in
i have 4 extra spotties on the bullbar.
sad thing is iv been told she'l be worth only around 4 or 5k.
disheartening...

tell us what mods are on ur 60 or is it just straight stock?

Right now it's a stock 1988 with a naturally asperated 2h (with 210,000ks) and that about it,But i plan to do 2" lift, 33" tyres, better bull bar (the one that is on there looks funny sits to far out) and a snorkel. This will all happen if the budget lets it but going to do the 2" lift, 33" tyres, Too start with and see how it goes from there.

Hey dude i have a 60 series as u can see in the picture and mines an '87 model and has the dual headlight front end its the way they came out, the puff of smoke is normal

Does it have a dual battery set up? if not i suggest getting one asap it helps so much with starting if u do it direct.

And mine is the base model with the barn doors and it has a factory LSD, u can tell by looking at the diff housing, there should be a LSD FLUID ONLY warning on it next to the filler plug unless its been painted over.

My suggetion with the LSD also is to have it fully reco'd and ask them to shim it up, or to Put washers behind the springs in the clutch packs. to tighten it up and have a really good working LSD

Also mine is standard height and running '33 inch tyres no probs, ive done a bit of work to the springs to make it flex better and the only issue is at max flex when the front diff is st the bump stops, it scrubs out slightly.

So if i were you i would throw those '33's on straight up go find a big mound and try em out, but tha 60 shouldnt be too worried even at standard height

A 60 with a 2H engine is a HJ60, not a HJ61 or 62.

Check the Vin No and the Chassis. If it has a 2H, then it's a HJ60. HJ61 had the 12HT engine. No such machine as a HJ62. ;)

Hey Rumbozz, if the budgets tight (like mine was) take your time enjoying the car as it is and save for a spring over axle. It might sound a lot of work but if you've got a mechanic that knows what they're doing (or if you do, I did mine), its a pretty straight forward task. Most importantly, its not overly expensive and when you're done you will have one of the most competent trucks going around. The advantage with the 60's (over GQ's) at that sort of height is that, despite the height, they keep pretty good road manners. [/img]

You sure about that as we had an 84 HJ60 wagon for work and it was a 4 speed then the boss got an ex telecom 85 cause it was 5pd and they were a fairly sort after truck in the early 90s the 5 speed ones he payed about 17k for it back in late 91

Yep, totally sure! I can't explain why your 84 model had a 4 speed, but the 5 speed was definately introduced in early 83.

There's two last things i need a little help with, what paint was used on the 60 series crusier (enamel or tupac)? as i will most likely be re-painting it and also what was the original tyre size on a standard 60 series?

Toyota Specs Sheet published 11/87. Still lists HJ60models with 5 Speed and LSD, but my 05/85 model has no LSD.
