Recomended oil for the TB42E?

Hey guys, I was wondering what oil you have found works best in the efi gq motor. I am currently running castrol magnatec and i am gettin a ticking noise out of the engine. Someone told me that the hydraulic lifters don't like the magnatec. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

its not hydraulic lifters, the tb42e has solids, check the tappet adjustment should be .38mm when hot.

i have run penrite hpr 30 in mine since i got it 2 years ago and am very happy with it

X3 HPR 30 magnatech is crap when it gets hot goes to water which = no oil pressure...

X4 for the penrite HPR30, But i guess that's obvious by now how good it is.

Penrite recommends HPR15 for that engine.


If i really had to use penrite, i'd use HPR10 the hot 60 rating of HPR15 and 30 is too thick for an engine that is meant to use an oil with a hot 40 rating. stepping up to a 50, like the HPR10 is heaps, even on a shagged engine.

but hey, if you don't mind wasting fuel, go for it.

my TB42E has been worked and turbo'ed

Under advise of Nutter and a few others i chose/choose to penrite

change it every 3500-5000 depending if i don't like the look/feel of it. If its had a hard time i'll change it as i see fit.
Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times

Has to make you wonder, why Penrite is the only oil company recommending a xxW60 oil, when ever company including nissan are saying to use a 10w40 or 15w40. with the exception of mobile who recommends 20w50.

thanks for the replies guys. i stuck hpr 30 in it and adjusted the the tapets. runs good. time will tell with the oil but it sounds like a good choice. also found a loose high tension lead on no.5 which wasn't doin me any favours.
