Oil leak 2L Hilux
Hi went out and done a bit of 4x4ing today. Went through some pretty big mud holes. Have now developed an oil leak at the front bottom of the motor near the little hump in the sump. Not sure if its the sump leaking or outa the front main seal? Any input???
Also motor seems a bit noisier and down a bit on power. Also oil pressure light coming on and off.
Cheers

You sure its not coming from the bottom of the oil filter..... Biggest 2l design f*ckup was facing the filter down, i smashed mine 3 times with stock shocks before i bought a remote oil filter for it.
I wouldnt be driving it until you sought it out if the oil pressure light is on and off, for one toyotas low oil pressure warning comes on when its already dangerously low pressures, and diesels don't last long without sufficient oil flow.
Aside from that it could be from the front main seal, but it would be coming out at the front of the motor where the timing cover meets the bottom of the block/sump.
Final word.... Mud = lots of money in replacing seals, diffs, etc.

I would take of the timing belt cover and suss out the leak. Sounds like its from the front main. Check the timing and the tension of belt. Definately sort it out before driving.
Berad- im pretty sure only 2wd 2L's came with a downwards facing oil filter. I swapped mine out for a 4wd filter housing.

Nah about 70 genuine toyota, fair bit less non genuine, but you'd change the belt while your at it, its about the worst job there is as far as maintenance goes. The alternator, radiator rah rah rah all have to come out.
This is why i'm not a fan of mud haha.

Fair enough, i thought my engine must have been a 2wd one, as I couldnt believe toyota would put it in such a stupid position. It hit with stock flex. The 4wd one was easy enought to get from the wreckers.berad wrote: Mines a 4x4 and had the filter facing down, various others i've seen down also, i know the 2lt/2lte had them horizontal.
If you're doing the belt, do the tensioner and bearing as well. I would get a genuine belt and main seal.dansharp wrote:ok looks like a job for next monday. So i need new timing belt, front main seal, timing cover gasket and i might throw a sump gasket in while i got the oil out.... Any idea's on timing belt price and that??
Genuine prices I got when I did mine last year:
Belt: $69
Front main: $20
Tensioner: $114
Idler bearing:$85
Good luck with it.

Will this kit do for what i need?

mines a 4wd 2l i think and not a turbo and the filter is mounted horizontal all the 2wd 2Ls came with the one your talking about (vertical) i think. i could be wrong. this is common problem when ppl convert and use a 2l outta a 2wd they need to change this as something hits under suspension travel. like i said i could be wrong but mines a 2L and NON turbo and my filter faces horizontal from the left side of the block.
and i agree mud is crap stay outta it. you will learn this when u root alternators, starters, radiators, axle seals, bearings, brakes, unis, tie rods and so on.

It looks like its got all the parts.dansharp wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 3DWatching

I would be concerned about the quality. Keep in mind, if your timing belt breaks, there's nothing stopping your valves from punching your pistons in the face.
I would find the source of the leak and any other problems its got, like the oil pressure, noise and loss of power, before shelling out for parts.
Ahhk, interesting i've personally seen 3 4x4 2ls with them vertical, surely they arent all 2wd motors, maybe the early model 2ls or something.BENOLUX wrote:mines a 4wd 2l i think and not a turbo and the filter is mounted horizontal all the 2wd 2Ls came with the one your talking about (vertical) i think. i could be wrong. this is common problem when ppl convert and use a 2l outta a 2wd they need to change this as something hits under suspension travel. like i said i could be wrong but mines a 2L and NON turbo and my filter faces horizontal from the left side of the block.
