hilux motor g/box t/case and diffs in a lwb zook
hilux motor g/box t/case and diffs in a lwb zook
as above i would like to know if anyone has put a hilux motor g/box t/case and diffs in a lwb zook and i have the hilux.
i dont want to hear why dont you just get a hilux because i have thaught about it and i would have the strength of the lux with the lighter weight of the zook i just want to know if anyone has done it and what problems i would face
just to give some more details the motor is a standard 18r with 4speed g/box and i am thinking of putting lux springs in it as well and running 33" tyres

so what you are saying is that a hilux chassis weighs the same as a zook chassis and a hilux cab weighs the same as a zook one
when was the last time you picked up a hilux door in one hand and a zook door in the other
a zook door is half the weight of a lux one
a zook chassis weighs a lot less than a lux chassis (i can pick up my lwb chassis by myself but there is no way i can pick up a lux chassis by myself)
yes i know the motor g/box t/case combo weighs more than a zook one as it is literally twice the size (and capacity and power)
and i have meassured the zook and the motor will fit in there
i will be outboarding the front springs to WT width so they bolt straight up to the lux front diff and i will be moving the perches on the rear diff to mach the zook spring width
and i will be doing a crossover steering conversion
so apart from the apparent weight problem can anyone tell me if they think i will have a problem with my proposed build

i have a problem with driving a lux that looks like thisKitika wrote:Just drive the lux? Or put the zook body on the lux if like the water leaks

and this is the zook (minus the 31's)

Looks like a pretty big project! If you don't mind me asking what suzuki parts have you been breaking to want the lux stuff? Also will the 18r have enough power for all the work? If there was a bit more grunt than the 18r to need the stronger parts and you have the time I'd do it
More Suzuki parts going to the big Suzuki Heaven in the sky!
im not saying that they are the same at all.
you skew what im saying to dismiss my opinion but then excuse the same principles (being the fact that a lux drivetrain will destroy the lightweightness of your car) to to back yourself up.
sounds like you're only going to hear what you want to hear.
i say keep them separate

im guessing the motor in the zook is dead??
im also guessing you have a perfectly good lux motor??
so you figured why pay more money to put a new motor or build a new zook motor when i have a good lux motor to put in.
thats another case of '' i got a V6 motor in the shed i want to put it in there, i already bought the motor so it going in''
yes the combo you sugested will work i guess.
but so will a 1.6 conversion, 5 speed, lux front, bunderea rear diff.
but yes that will be more money outlayed. you will have a far better rig that would be on the road sooner

Life would be very boring if we all drove stock zooks lol.

this is exactly the reason i am thinking of doing this and it is the only reason i am thinking of doing it as i have never wheeled it
it is an unfinished project at the moment and the only problem i have with it at the moment mechanicly is the front diff not working (havn't pulled it apart to find out what is wrong with it yet) and the clutch needs adjusting
so please dont bag me just cause i want to do something different from joe blow and john citizen didnt anyone else do something just to be different and do it their way

Being different on this forum IS staying stock. i personally hate the thought of toyota bits in a suzuki, but most people quite happily hack up the ride for the ultimate 3 storey offroad skateboard.flyinwall wrote: so please dont bag me just cause i want to do something different from joe blow and john citizen didnt anyone else do something just to be different and do it their way
if you do do it make sure you rub it in once you achieve 20 000kms of reliabilkity, but i get the impression that this will be another incomplete glorious pipedream.

So whats been done to the zook? and will you sell the Zook and Lux seperatly? I 'might' be interested in a Suzuki ute, but not at all interested in more lux stuff. PM me if you want.flyinwall wrote:i have a problem with driving a lux that looks like this

OK, assuming you go ahead with your idea, and you can get Queensland Transport to let you do it; why bother with the incredibly dull 18R and 4speed? For the amount of work that I presume would be required, why not get an EFI motor (maybe even an alloy motor for slightly lower weight) and a 5speed box?
Personally if you want to do it, I'd can the lux motor and box, and put in a Vitara EFI motor (G16 or J20) and box, as it will be lighter, more modern and the tailshaft outputs are almost identical to the lux outputs, so will match the Hilux pumpkin locations. Or if keeping lux stuff, I'd look for a 2.7L 3rz and 5 speed box.
Just ideas...
Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
i reckon you should go for it, its your project so dont listen to the people that say its a waste of time, only thing i would change is the motor, the 18R is a boat anchor and personally not my first choice, however it is your project and i hope it all goes well, sorry i couldnt help with any info as per your initial request
The 18r while not a bad motor was far from good, its all iron and there is alot of it.
The carb is crap offroad ( i mean really really poor, it is aweful) Quite Torquey for what it was though.
I would nto put one in, but reckon it would physically fit.
I reckon you would need to reinforce the chassis as it is quite heavy and over time and clobbering I would say it would start to make mince meat of the front half of the car.
The 4 speed with lux diffs (488s from memory) would work with about a 32 inch tyre, ie 7.50x16, bigger than that wyou would need to regear a bit the 18r does not lug all that well.
I would most likely be putting the Zuk body on the lux chassis pick the places it is good to loose those extra Kg's. get all that aftermarket support for your driveline with the good looks and light weight of a sierra body, much less fab work and more time out on the trails and tracks..
Do a build thread and let us kow what you decide.

i know what the 18r's are like as i had an 82 lux with an 18r and 32" BFG muds and it would cruise all day at 110kph (topped out at 135 kph though)

I met a fulla with a VPmotor, VP auto with lux Tcase, lux axles and rover springs... He said that past 140clicks was scary but easy to do
Go for it i think you would be the first to complete it...lol

I would be checking the legalities BEFORE you start as QLD doesn't allow much in the way of modifications. I seriously doubt this would be legal in QLD, but a zook bodied Hilux sounds more doableflyinwall wrote:is that rego'd and engineered in qldgypsy wrote:mate of mine has a swb zook with 3sge hilux diffs, transfer and gear box

Ransom note = demand + collage
On the downside you will probably loose alot of under car clearance as the hilux stuff is big.
going from spring under to spring over will gain back the lost clearance wont it
I seriously doubt this would be legal in QLD, but a zook bodied Hilux sounds more doable
the chassis i have is rusted out and i am planning on just using what i have

Sounds to me like you want to do this regardless of other advice.
Speak to the queensland DOT get the Yes or No and get on with starting a build thread or finding a different way of repowering your Zuk.
Hiluxs are notoriously nose heavy, even with their much heavier chassis and much longer wheel base ..

Have you checked out Pirate, Zukikrawlers or Zuwharrie? Heaps of dudes in the states put lux running gear/motors in to their zooks.
I know you've already addressed it, but seriously, an 18R? Ugh.
Still, do a build thread regardless. Prove the haters like me wrong.
