Winch?
have you seen the MAXTRAX,they are basically a plastic ramp that you jam under your wheels for more traction, ideal for sand driving and perhaps "a little bit of mud!"..i think they sell for about $250.NO Whinch,no extra batteries,no maintence!! 5kgs compared to 40kgs(whinch and battery)
sierras....There Boxy But There Good
Slow....4Low.....And Up We Go!
Slow....4Low.....And Up We Go!
and almost completely useless!
Seriously, these are a waste of money. The "proper" version of this idea is this:
There are also steel versions used in WWII which are strong enough to use as a bridge to cross trenches. They are heavy though. The aluminium ones shown above and split if used as a bridge.
The maxtrax thingies might be useful in sand, but nowhere near as useful is another car with a snatch strap or any sort of winch, especially if you travel by yourself.
and in any case, yesterday, we were out with a $280 chinese winch and it pulled like a trooper all day and made for noce, safe recoveries.
Steve.

personally I belive anything bigger than 6000lbs is too big on a sierra/vitara but there are plenty of chinese or no name winches that can be had for under $500 that wouldn't even know that a suzuki was attached.
Unfortunatly most are 9-12000lbs and weight is getting up there.
Ive got a no name 6000lb winch that has been going strong for near two years now and pulled everything from two suzukis strapped togther to beached patrols, but like anything you got to treat the equipment with respect.
warn and premier make some nice 6000lb jobs but probably more than $500 tmax 6000 may be close though.
cheers andrew

85 high roof 1.3, 6.5 tc, air lockers, ruf and 34 swampers. yep its an ugly pos.
beg to differ that the Maxtrax are next to useless. I have used them a few times for recoveries in sand in Robe. They worked brilliantly getting two very under prepared vehicles out of very soft sand in situations where a snatch strap was useless. Also have used them getting a car out of the snow
They have a place in many peoples recovery setup, just not as the only one

X2. I carry a hand winch.
But I also carry 30m of plasma rope with eyes at each and an ARB competition snatch block. that allows me to slingshot a car forwards out of a hole or up a hill with me from behind them, and that setup weighs next to nothing.
there\'s more than one way to skin a cat.
PS if you need an electric winch, 6000 is plenty. I\'d try and find a secondhand 6000lb warn though. They have very quick light load speed- much quicker than the generic winches.
