2.8l turbo diesel hilux problems.

Post by SILVER LN106 LUX »

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what would cause a knocking sound in the engine/clutch. I've had it at mechanics who've told me a whole bunch of different things including big end, busted valve seat, sliding cylinder sleeve and screwed injectors. I have replaced the injectors and the noise is still there. I'm pretty sure its the clutch, but i thought I'd ask on here if anyones had this problem before.

Get a dirty big long screw driver and use it as a listening tool to narrow down where the noise is. So far they have the noise from the top end down to the bottom end. A noisy injector if you listen to them all through it will stand out like dogs balls, similarly you can lay underneath and put it on the bottom of the block and big ends will thump away, you can work over the top of each cylinder and narrow it down. You get the drift.

If its up the top end inside the motor it could be a loose Pre combustion chamber (not good news, mine smashed the engine to bits when it came out) or it could be rod stretch (when you have stuffed bearing aloows it to stretch upwards) allowing the piston to ever so slightly kiss the head ( this should only come in as you rev it and not really be there at idle unless its really bad) (this is also not good)
Without more information I cant think of any good news but do the listening first before you panic most problems turn out to be something simple.

it's done at least 6000k's since it started. its there at idle and increases in speed with the revs, but doesn't change volume. eventually it gets drowned out by engine noise, and the engine sounds to be running sweet.
