Thinking of getting into a new 4by before the years out and just wondering what peoples opinions are of the new 70 series. I will be looking at the 4 door model. I did consider the new 4 dr jeeps in a turbo deisel but after d-head salesmen and sluggish performance ive convinced the mrs to consider $$$ the 70. I know they got 2x lockers and ttv8 diesel which has almost sold me on specs alone but what are they like offroad and round town.
cheers mick

New 70 series - what are they like
Moderators: toaddog, Elmo, DUDELUX
I have one.. 76 wagon
Diff locks are an option, not standard..
The car is an absolute beast... On road, off road it has the power and balls.. Go for a test drive and you'll see what I mean.
I have the workmate version (pov pack), but i've added plenty of creature comforts and it's very nice to drive.

only single turbo in the 7x, the twin is only in the 200 series.
we have some at work, they are awesome to drive, smooth and powerful. I would imagine plenty of scope for extra power with chipping, bigger intercooler etc.
plenty of space.
there are a few negatives: gay leaf spring rear end, only a single 90 litre fuel tank - no factory second tank even as an option. they are overpriced but you may be able to get a good end of financial year deal right now.

Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
I have a 76 wagon with the factory lockers. Have lifted it two inches, put 285/75 MTZ on, Bulll bar, rails, steps, 12000lb winch and a long range tank (160l). As dumbdunce said, overpriced but when you drive it you'll love it. On road it's great although you do need to keep the tyres balanced but you get that with most mud tyres. I pull about 1.5 ton of campertrailer with it and it does it with ease. Fuel wise I'm getting about 12.5 l/100 empty and about 15 l/100 with the trailer. If I give it a floggin i can see a big increase in these figures especially with the trailer on. I have had it off road and in a few hairy siutations and it does like to lift wheels because of the lack of flex but this has a fair bit to do with my suspension set up (constant 400kg springs dont flex real well!) This is where the lockers come in very useful. When you get crossed up, flick the switch and off you go... I also think they are the best value for money factory accesories you can get, cheaper than the air con!
My missus (all 5 foot 2 of her) loves driving it and brings it to the shops any chance she gets.
Next on the list is a chip and exhaust package but I'm not in a hurry and would say i'm more than happy with it.
There is an update coming out from July build date with air bags and a new dash with a decent sound system and a drink holder. there is also a new front bumper and telospic steering colum and a few other minor bits.
Grab a drive in one and it'll make you smile!
