GQ Something Broke transmission

Post by Baalsgate »

Hey Guys

Sadly my 89 model Nissan Patrol GQ Auto ( petrol ) stopped with a bit of a noise just driving up a hill like it kicked out of gear all it does is rev out not engaging in forward reverse 1 2 or drive no gear positions shows any sign or typical noise of engaging into a gear the different 4wd modes also make no change 2wd or 4wd Low or high nothing, I dont know I did suspect earlier this month that the rear diff was a bit worn out .

So is this the Transmission ??? or could it be the transfer case ??, mind you I have a big turbo on my TB42 so its been getting a hard time much more power there than it typicaly had before, just cant use any of that power now ...

Any similar experiences or advice on the difficulty one might expect changing the transmission , such as if there are different versions of the transmission or maybe some seal blows and thus the torque converter pressure isn't engaging any of the bands ?

Anyone with a suitable heavy duty Transmission that would fix my problem want to give me a price ?

thanks Guys ..

Have you checked your auto trans fluid and level??

Could be either transmission or transfer from what you've said.

I havent checked the level in a while but even if it was low it would it have not been slow to grab or just slipped a bit rather than poping into nothing ?
I will check the levels when i get it back to the garage, still have to pick it up :(

Is there some way to diagnose if its the transfer case or the transmission ?

The transfer case that is the bit that connects to the little stick on the side and changes the mode , that was rather sus but having never owned a patrol I was not sure how it was suppose to work but when going to 4wd Low it seemed to have no syncro had to start it in 4L while 2H and 4H were able to be shifted in neutral.

I have only used in 4wd mode a few times and the rear wheels seemed like they were skipping over a cog when driving really slow which led me to believe that the rear diff was an issue.

Sounds like the auto , if the transfer case had broken when you put it in drive and it didn't go then when you put it in park it would ratchet on the park lock as there would be nothing stopping the output shaft on the auto from turning (usually the brakes and tail shaft ) so the internals of the box keep spinning . Me thinks you done the box

sounds identical to what happened to a fellow member over new years.

Turned out to be the spline stripped out of the torque convertor, have been told its quite common.

Still turned out to be around the $1000 mark to fix.

GQ Transmission Update

Post by Baalsgate »

ok all the torque converter was shredded will try and get some pictures, i wonder is there a better torque converter available that can handle the power ?

I Got a second-hand transmission and torque converter from a 93 GQ ok some differences were :

1. ring gear has different holes for the torque converter to bolt up
( Anyone know if the 93 torque converter will be any stronger than the 89 version ? )
2. The internal spacing for Drive Reverse and Neutral 1 and 2 is different as i swapped over linkages from my old box, any idea where i may get a 93 transmission linkage that would put it right , the t-bar is selecting what i need but isnt really lined up with the indication position exactly.

Had mechanic quote about $400 to install as I thought that seemed reasonable , final installation cost was $645 bit higher than the $400 they quoted at first I thought .

But i am back on the road now so happy about that , thanks people for your help and advice.
