Jk lift mods - WHATS LEGAL? ANYTHING?
Hiya, been about 2 years since ive been on here! sold my big fun car due to work TD hilux but found myself recently really wanting a car i can mod again! thinkin maybe i can convince the boss to give me an allowance in lieu of a car....anyway that brings me here! i cant stop looking at these JK unlimited Jeeps, ive always loved them but 2dr had too many limitations!
I mainly just want to know as ive never really owned a "newish" car so never had to worry about it really but what mods are legal, or more importantly covered by insurance? I guess im mainly talking lift, i dont wanna go extreme maybe 3" or 2" coil spacers first and add a 2" suspention lift later? (if you can do that lol)
Just thought id do a lil research before i jump into it.
Also ive only ever known 15" wheels, the alloys that come on these new 4x4s what is the size thats about 33"? Is it stupid to think id just swap them for some 15 steelies and put 33 or 35's on it??
anyway what a random bunch of questions lol im not lookin for much specific advice but any helpfull hints ppl can offer would be great. If i got one id just love one thats lifted enough to be noticable, little bit larger rubber, turbo diesel, aftermarket bars etc maybe front locker oh and white lol.

hey cheers mate, ghod the things i had to do to my GQ to get 35's to run smoothly! lol
So from memory, is 2" lift legal? I just dont wanna have a sweet lookin car to go up the arse of someone and find out its not covered by insurance, preferably id like to go more than 2inches, but if thats all thats legal id stick with it, probably stay at 33's too (or equivalent lol) towing alot and wanna keep it driving relatively normal.

Well depends which state you are in but it doesn't take much lift to fit 35's to them I have heard a 1" bodylift does the trick, but then others have said you need a 1" body lift to run 33's, if you fit 35's it would be illegal anyway, but 33's are definately legal, they come factory with 32's. There are some limitations to mods because there aren't as many around as Nissans and Toyotas and stuff from USA is expensive now, the standard Wranglers have small diffs in the front, so consider the rubicon so you get Dana44's front & rear, 4:1 transfer case and factory diff locks. Only problem with the Rubicon is they don't come in diesels or with Hardtops, but hard tops can be brought secondhand or aftermarket. But if you're not planning a front locker then the Dana 35 is probably ok for 35's, thought the gearing may be a bit tall.
They are highly computerised despite their appearance, but the factory traction control is better than twin LSD's and on par with some lockers.

ARB old man suspenson 2inch lift, which 2 most ppl has turned out 2 come to around 3inches is reletively cheap and a nice start.
Disconnect the front sway bar 5min job and u will have more droop.
yes 33's will fit with standed lift but will scrub when flexing but with the lift you will be fine, just fit the 33's to your standard rims no worries.
These mods i have done myself.
Tell ur insurance about ur mods and you shouldnt have any dramas.

07 Jeep Wrangler JK: OME lift, Swaybar Disco's, 33"MTZ's & 33"KM2's, TJM Steelbar, ARB sliders, Safari Snorkel, ARB Airlockers.. more 2 come
jk's check this web site
www.procomp.com.au there is heaps of stuff for Jk's. 285/75 fits on standard, 315's fit 2" lift forget body lift. cant put a body lift in when the car has air bags fitted so dot believe everything you read on here most have no idea..
a pootrol
if u put 285's and a lift on a jk on road it rides like shit and the esp sensors come on more quickly cause of the movement and the flex. in an auto wrangler u loss overdrive with 285's and secondly 285 dont come standard on a jk
they come stock with 17's and some of the first ones out came stock with 16's
best bet is 265/75's with OME 5mm lift, yes this does give u a 3 inch lift as this is what i have on mine

I have to disagree with you on 285's making a wrangler handling badly, quite a few people are running 33's and larger. You may have to increase your caster to approx 5 deg to get better handling but if you do the right lift with adjustable panhards and arms maybe a better draglink there shouldnt be a problem. I had a few issues when i first did my lift and larger tyres but a good alignment and recentre of the steering wheel and no esp issues.
The overdrive issue again may come into play on the later models which came out with 17 inch wheels with 255/75r17 (32 inch) tyre with a lower diff ratio, but on the 07 crd auto most came out with the 4.10 ratio and have no problem pushing 285/75r16 (33 inch) if anything my fuel consumption has gone down as it now sits on about 1800rpm at 100k instead of 2000rpm. The use of the AEV procal helps with the gear changes and re calibrates your speedo.

well depends where you live...mate is getting built in bris a jk (4 DOOR) with (can't remember) either a 4" or 6" long arm kit (along with atlas 2, dana 60's, 37's, 7lt SRT8 hemi, etc, etc imported kit from the states) and has an enginer to approve ALL the mods

We do a 2" Dobinsons lift for the JK's for $330 for the set of 4 coils. The lift comes in at a tad over 2 inches but less then the OME kit. There are higher front coils for the diesel and winch etc.
I don't have them on my web site but I will get around to it one of these days.
If I had the dollars I think I would get the JK but I am quite happy with ZJ Grand Cherokee right now.

No problems with 285's and 2" lift on mine at all. maybe the 2 door is a bit more twitchy, but no different I suspect than any other short wheelbase.jkdevilfighter wrote:if u put 285's and a lift on a jk on road it rides like shit and the esp sensors come on more quickly cause of the movement and the flex. in an auto wrangler u loss overdrive with 285's and secondly 285 dont come standard on a jk

Afternoon.
Recently i have been looking to buy a jeep wrangler highly modificated.
The first thing i did was look into insurence. Most companys wouldnt even touch the car, others wanted 3 grand plus a year. Eventually i found Australian 4wd insurence, basically they said to me they would insure anything. I told them exactly what mods the car would have and they gave me a quote. It ended up being 800 a year.
Now all i have to do is find a jeep for sale
Hope that helped.

Better get him to check with DOT about those mods, because it doesn't matter what an engineer says, if DOT don't think its legal/safe, they won't let it on the road.def90 wrote:well depends where you live...mate is getting built in bris a jk (4 DOOR) with (can't remember) either a 4" or 6" long arm kit (along with atlas 2, dana 60's, 37's, 7lt SRT8 hemi, etc, etc imported kit from the states) and has an enginer to approve ALL the mods

When I was in hospital laid up last year with a bung appendix, a mate bought me 4x4 Australia and it had a story on the Rubicon Unlimited. I'd NEVER considered a jeep before, but when I am in a position to buy a (pretty new) car, a JK Unlimited Rubicon is definitely on MY list!!
Bummer about petrol only, but what do you do!!
Again, that black is very well done! Congrats to the owner!
