They rock. They are cheaper and easier to maintain than 80s.
But you need to get one without rust in the pillars or roof.
heres mine.

2H Intercooled = It really goes.
60
If you drive like me, get a 60.
Cheap for parts and you dont whing when you punch ya rear quarter in or put her on its side.
Blokes will say that about their 80's but id rather spend 3 grand and drive the guts out of it , then spend 10 grand plus and be to scared to scratch her.

Comp guys will love an 80's because they're a spring setup.
If you're after something for a bit of weekend fun and touring, the 60's is a beast. If you're serious about offroad, you'ld probably get it sprung over (but there are other lift options available).
Mine is an FJ62 with SOA (spring over axle) and there aren't many trucks that leave it behind.
In my experience, both engines are solid (whether diesel or petrol). The advantage of petty is that its a lot more powerful and can be put on LPG for cheap. The diesel obviously has its advantages just bare in mind the servicing is every 5,000K's in deisel, 10,000 in petrol so theres not a whole lot of cost saving.

If you can find a rust free one to start with you'll be better off.
It might cost you an extra 1 or 2 grand for a rust free but you'll definately not regret it.
rust in the roof and quarters and inside the doors around the hinges are the most common places, but also check the bottom of the radiator support panel, firewall at the top and bottom of the doors.
They also rust in the chassis behind the exhaust brackets, and at the back where they are double rails.

i also have a spare rust free turret here if anyone is interested

I just picked one up for $900 with december rego.
Its got a damaged quarter and 5th gear is buggered but other than that its an honest old truck.
quite simply put - the sixty series is the single greatest bit of automobile technology ever unleashed on this earth =-=- possessing the strength of a m1 abrahms the speed of a ferrari, styling by pininfarina and nearly 3 times the torque YES THATS RIGHT - 3 TIMES THE TORQUE of other cars with around 1/3rd of the torque
made for real men with arses built like battlleship armour the 60 series is simply the pinnacle of 4wd engineering at its best
having said that - im slightly biased

Very helpful replies, especially kranky al
Wont ever be doing any extreme style 4x4ing, so it looks like either would be a good thing for someone like me! I just need to be able to get to places that I cant get to with my Falcon, towing a trailer full of dirt bikes and a car full of freeloaders!
Reading through the forums here, it looks as if spares are fairly easy to get for both these trucks, so just try and get hold of one without the rust eh.....
Cheers, rattly one!

Well, I've gone and went and done it now
Just picked up an old FJ60
Very clean and tidy unit, drives lovely, I can see why people love these things.
Its got a 3F petrol motor, whatever that means!!!! 33x12.5" BFG mud terrains, spotties, CB radio! Anyone use these things these days?
Got a slight diff or gear box whine, might have to start looking around for spares!
there is a good chance I will be picking the brains right out of you lot on a regular basis from here on.
Gonna get under the thing tomorrow and check all fluids etc, yep there WILL be questions!

Re: 60
Well the first thing is to fix the hum in the bum. The rear diff is leaking, so I spose that's where the noise is coming from!brendan rooke wrote:Great work,

Basically, work my way through the drive line, wheel bearings, brakes etc, so there is less chance of break downs, then just get out there and learn to drive the beast off road
Now lets see, where's that workshop manual
