transmission noise hj47

Post by cruiser60series »

with my foot off the clutch pedal and in neutral at low revs (below 1500rpm) my gearbox makes a crunchy rattling noise. At 1500 or above it magically stops. It also does this in forward and reverse at low speed. I can't tell if it does in higher gears as of all the other driving noises.

If i depress the clutch pedal the noise goes away.

Do you think it's a clutch through-out bearing problem or shaft bearing problems in the box?

If i roll along in first and use the clutch and the noise goes away will this confirm that its the through out bearing? If it stays i can say it's coming from the gearbox?

The gearbox and transfer function perfectly and is a 4speed for a hj47.
At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.

Yep, sounds like typical throw out bearing to me!

i would be inclined to suggest gearbox rollover noise.. wich i say with the age of your truck it would most likely be noticeable.. , not to say the throwout bearing might not be cactus too.. i make my reasoning due to this.. the throwout bearing is under load when you have your foot on the clutch and as far as i have seen bearings make noises when worn out generaly when put under load. with your foot on the clutch pedal this "disconects" the gearbox from engine stopping the input shaft from turning at full engine rpm. when you release the clutch the input shaft turns with the engine. Only way to check your throwout really is to remove the box and turn it by hand , for what they are worth i just replace them when im there especially if the car likes mud and water.
Beep. Beep. Beep.. Whats that sound? Oh Look Its Just Another ZD30 On A Tow Truck.. =)

What torque? Tighten it till it strips and then back it off half a turn.
