Tyre toughness

I have looked around the board and can't find a post that covers this topic.
I was recently told that my MT-117 were tougher than the TSL but I need a tougher/stronger tyre in 36" to 38" (preferably closer to 38" and bias ply) for 100% offroad driving in my 'Cruiser ute.
How do you rate these tyres for puncture and tear resistence.

only ones I can comment on are the goodyear mtr and baja claw

Mtr- Shit compared to bias ply. sidewall bags heaps on heavy truck with low pressure. easy to tear and tread is super soft. Good for sticking to obsticles though.

Claw- super super tuff sidewall. Don't bag until you got sfa air in em
For offroad only I would definitely go claw over mtr

Station tracks through heavily timbered country mostly, mud and steep, deep, wet creek crossings during the wet (now) and sand, bulldust and steep, deep dry creek crossings in the dry.

had 35 centipedes and they were the toughest i have tried so far.
had a look at the 37x12.5x16 creepy crawler and it has a very thick side wall as well.
my present 38 tsl's are not as thick but i have had no problems with them

Toughest by far would be the TSL SX - I think its a cross bly with steel belts?? Very tough tyre and very stiff so you need to run low pressures which means you probably need beedlocks

I´d go SX...
Actually, that is what I have...a set of 5 brand new 36x12.5x15 SXs that´ll replace my 35 ETs when I get my new rims, locks, and so forth...

Cut them up ("groove") for them to flex better and they will be super tough...

So it would appear that the TSL SX is the toughest traction tyre out there.
Pity it's not made in 16". And !5" rims wont clear my brakes. :x Might have to go to 16.5" :x
Where is the best place in Qld to buy this type of tyre? Fourbys?

It is made in 16" rims...
32, 36, and 38...

I've decided to get TSL SX 38x12.5x16.5.
They are the only tyre anywhere near this size in a 10 ply (and without the 2 steel belts of all other SX) with a maximum pressure of 70 PSI when all the others are 30-45. It means switching to 16.5" rims, but I had to get new rims made anyhow.

there's a heap of 15" tsl-sx's on that page but they are only 6 ply.
would still be tougher than a lot of the old 10 and 14 ply 750-16's

the 10 ply ones will be tougher than a witches tit :roll:

I ALWAYS get confused about PLY RATING and NUMBER OF PLYs...which is the one you are referring to?

Anyways, whatever ply you choose the SX is gonna be tough. Period.

So it is PLY RATING...therefore has nothing to do with the durability of the tire but rather the carrying capacity and flexiness (in our case).

I am CERTAIN that any SX will not fail you, and to get more flexiness, I am going to groove my set when I get them installed.

Might only have 4plys - but I bet these 38x12.5x16's would be a heck of a lot tougher than those girly swampers :twisted:
