Hi Chaps
Firetruck suggested I drop you a line.
I'm looking at buying a HiLux but cant decide between a straight petrol version say 98-2000 (dollars seem around $30) vintage or a turbo-diesel around 2000 vintage (dollars a bit higher $32)
I know this is a complete novy question but just wanted some opinions.
Main uses - probably light commercial with a few hundred kilos in the back - light towing and a little off-roading but nothing hard core. Mostly a family truck with a bit of a commercial bent
Any suggestions/recommendations which species I should punt for?

Welcome mate,
By the sounds of what you will be doing, go for the diesel... the petrol is just too thirsty for what you described. The new Turbo has sack, good low range crawling and driven with half a brain will return much better range out of each fill.
My Brother Inlaw just bought the new V6 petrol lux and a work mate of his just bought the new Turbo Deisel with in a week of each other. The deisel is fast off the line and has much better fuel economy. And cruises down the highway just as easy at 110.
The deisel will be much better in the long run. As long as you dont get any bad lots of fuel often you should see 300tho out of the injector pump before it needs an overhaul. Its common for the petrols to blow head gaskits long before this.
