Sepertaing a Bundy Transfer case from the auto?

Post by Mudbits »

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to seperate a Bundy Transfer case from the auto?
I have undone all the bolts around the case just behind the auto sump and undone the 36mm nut on the back.
Should it come apart now? Or are there hidden bolts inside?

bunderas never came with an auto?

if it is a landcruiser split transfer then you need to disassemble the transfer from the rear. removal requires almost complete disassembly of the transfer case.

36mm nut?? on the back of the input shaft?

Its on our NZ ones which are Jap import Landcruiser Prado and it was a 1992 2LT auto.
The 36mm nut is behind a plate on the rear of the transfer on what appears to be the main shaft runing through the gearbox and transfer.
So start disasembling the whole thing you reakon?

I had a look at a friends transfer he had detached and i had just missed a bolt underneath behind the auto oil pan. Its just as simple of undoing all the bolts around the front of the transfer and it falls off. No need to disasemble it!

Thats a A340 auto with a 60 series tranfer on it(havent seen that before) the 60 series australian version did not have that auto it had the a440f and you have to remove the transfer from the box in pieces on this one.

Yes it does. Just use the bellhousing, and probably oil pump and input shaft (about 2mins to change. Only a few bolts) and use 7m tc and flex plate and it will all bolt together. I did the same thing but with a 1uz ;)

Hey Turoa,
So to fit a 1UZ to the auto you use the Prado auto and change the imput shaft, oil pump and bellhousing from the standard Lexus auto?
And just use the flexplate and torque converter that comes with most import engines?
What did you use for engine mounts?
Any other problems in doing the conversion?

Yes that is what I have done. The prado trans is pretty much the same as the lexus one except for the fact that it is missing the shift quality solenoid (not needed cause 4wd's are luxury cars).

The parts I used from the 1uz box were

Oil pump
input shaft
bellhousing
speed sensor.
Torque converter

The speed sensor is not used on the prado box but there is a boss that is easily drilled out and a hole to tap for a 6mm bolt.

Mine is actually bolted into my landrover (series 2a) but its an unfinished project so far. I know this setup works because I know one guy who has done it and know of a few others.

For engine mounts I just used some rubber sj413 spring bushes. They work quite well because they will keep the vibrations at bay but also not let the motor move around. The stock rubber mounts would be easy to use but none came with my motor.

Another thing I will be doing at some stage though is manually controlling the auto (quite easy to do as you can choose what gear you want by turning the gear solenoids on or off). Ill probably also shim the accumulators for a faster shift

Also std auto on 90-95 Surfs (A343F), should be ship loads of them in NZ.
The 185 Surf chassis was used as the basis for the early Prado, so same running gear.
