Howdy
Just wondering wat size front mount air/air intercoolers people r fitting behind the grills of ther gen2, gen3 lux/4runners without butchering to much?
I will b fitting one for my turbo 3RZ and am contimplating a 600x300x76 PWR core but just checking it will be a cleanish fit in the front frame. Obviously there will be sum custom cutting involved and It wont b my first install of this kind.
Cheers for any replys

i have a ebay spec 600x300x76 behind the grill of my 89 hilux, did have to cut the bottom of the rad support out. I put a 50x5mm brace were i removed the bottom of the rad support. I also had to remove the bonnet catch support that goes from the support to the bottom of the rad support.
I will remaking a mount that comes off the top of the cooler mounts.

hey mate, intercoolers are pretty much trial and error, unless they are either factory or you get the info from someone else who has done it. I think the cooler you described is a little to big for a 3rz. Dont go to large as the snail is only small and doesnt create great boost to begin with, so you wouldnt wanna make it to big which would cause a laggier response. keep plumbing as short as possible. and try not to butcher the rad support panel .. ESPECIALLY if your truck has a body lift !!! they crack really easily !!

thanks mate, turbo will be either a R32 T3 or T3/T4 or GT roller bearing equiv if im feeling rich on about 14psi so lag shudnt be an issue, Ive fitted 600X300 to RB25's and EJ20's b4 which are smaller engines with similar sized turbos and they hav had good results so I think I shud be fine in that reguard.
Cheers rory for the reply, I understand ther will hav to be cutting just wanted a heads up to save me buying a core which was ridiculously oversized. I would be able to pull the front off and do sum measuring myself but Im without the truck at present.
thanks

mine has a hiflow t4 and isnt to laggy at all, 2300rpm gives 5psi, 3800 12psi. very driveable offroad, altho the next size down would prob fit better its what i had and works very well, driving home from senic rim the other nite showed intake airtemps at 19degrees.

Thats very interesting to know mate, Thanks. The most info Ive been able to find is from blokes with turbo 3RZ's in street cars so ther outlook on turbo sizing is sum wat different to us 4by owners as ther goal is high topend torque and boost. I hav a T3 here but am kind of skeptical that it is a bit small for the 3RZ, obviously it will be very responsive but probably to a point which sacrifices it sumwat with on road driving and highway cruising power potential, I hav a feeling that it wud be producing low boost while cruising at say 120km/hr which wudnt do the fuel economy to well?
I was possibly looking at using a T3/T4 hybrid instead for a bit more flow but may be able to go a little bigger seeing as u use a straight T4 successfully. What size garrett rollerbearing wud be a equivalent to a T3/T4 style turbo? GT35 series?

It will be way to small, i had a r33 turbo on my 3rz and it was spoolin positive pressure at cruise throttle positions.
t04, gt30r (.63 rear) etc are good matchs for them, a gt35r will work well to but more suited to people chasing high end power.

Why is is 600x300 to big for a 2700cc motor, what snail did he describe that is small, with low boosts, and 3rzs dont come standard turbo, so to keep the air temps as low as possible would be optimum goal, lag from coolers is so minute it is not worth worrying about. Long sharp bending pipes is another matter i would be concentrating more on this than worryin about .2psi pressure drops from a cooler.Ashley_bmx wrote:hey mate, intercoolers are pretty much trial and error, unless they are either factory or you get the info from someone else who has done it. cheers, berad
I thought as much and its not to much of a drama, Ill find use for the T3 I hav elsewhere no doubt. I shall hav to hav a look for sumthin a little bigger. Will definately be goin 600x300 if I decide to use a air/air core int he end.
Hav any of use contimplated putting a water/air tube core ova the top of the tappet cover, wud be a perfect fit between compressor outlet and standard throttle body position and super short distance. Bit more pricey to set up and less turbo flutter but wud work better im guessing?
Cheers for the info

alternatively how do KKR turbos go reliability wise? Id love to get a new garrett but they are an expensive bit of kit.
I have had a look at the KKR430 (.58 A/R turbine housing) and the KKR480 which has a bigger turbine wheel then the 430 and E-housing of .69 A/R.
think one of these wud be alrite?
Cheers
I know of a few being used on a twin turbo 1uz circuit car, theyre fine so far after 18months or so, i think the cheaper ones have come along way, but you have to watch which brands you buy some are good some not so good.
Just keep an eye out on ebay, gt30's, t04s etc come up fairly often, i see it as alot of people thinking " biggest is best" and then findiing out its way to big for their baby motor.

Yeah, its worth a shot, yer depending what you want it for, in a 4x4 imo a responsive turbo is not as good as something that comes on similar to rorys, off road on stepups etc etc, if you put your foot down a little you don't want to go from 80rwhp to 200rwhp in a matter of seconds, and spooling boost all the time will cause alot of fuel consumption and high air temps when the cooler/radiator doesn't have high airflow when its idleing around in the bush, which is where the petrol turbos are different to diesels, where a/f ratios are king not temps. Even just off positive pressure turbo's add alot of low down torque which is what your after.
What are the specs for the turbo, what front cover does it have, turbine size's, pitch etc, on average a slightly bigger front cover/turbine will benefit a 3rz more than the other way around, the 3rz push's out alot of air due to comp and size, putting a smaller front turbine & cover will cause the air to get hot fast and run out of efficiency.

Re: lux intercooler sizing Q
Would have through 450 * 300 * 76 would be better size for your LUX which is what is normally recommended for a 2.5HILUX diesel.a1 mech wrote:Howdy

Re: lux intercooler sizing Q
never heard of a 2.5L diesel lux, dont think ther is one
450 core wud be plenrty I guess, Ill hav to measure when I get the truck back.
Berad, I run dualcases so that will allow good traction even if the engine is off boost. The specs for the turbo r in the below link

Guess I must be stupid COs I own one and its AUTO also. YOu need to look aound more. Guess I'll have to run out to the back shed and get the engine model to prove it.a1 mech wrote:never heard of a 2.5L diesel lux, dont think ther is one
