Hey all i was just wondering when converting a 4.4 to efi can the setup off a 3.5 be used ? and if so where can i get the adapter plates?
thanks

4.4 efi conversion Q's
Moderator: Micka
Toorak Tractors in Melbourne sell the manifold spacers so you can use a 3.5/3.9 efi manifold, some have had reasonable success using the 3.5 efi gear with so fuel pressure tweaks but an aftermarket ecu is your best bet for tuneability, if you are good with a soldering iron then megasquirt diy ecu's offer a lot options to run coil packs and dual fuel maps.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
thanks for the reply, can you tell me what the limiting factors of using the 3.5 efi gear? i don't believe the 3.5's have a trigger system like a crank angle sensor etc do they, so i thought that the ecu would be fine, the injectors and fuel pump might not be up to scratch and would probably have to be upgraded, i was kind of hoping to retain the standard ecu, is there anything i can do so that i don't have to change it?Loanrangie wrote:Toorak Tractors in Melbourne sell the manifold spacers so you can use a 3.5/3.9 efi manifold, some have had reasonable success using the 3.5 efi gear with so fuel pressure tweaks but an aftermarket ecu is your best bet for tuneability, if you are good with a soldering iron then megasquirt diy ecu's offer a lot options to run coil packs and dual fuel maps.

First up i havent done the conversion so i'm going on info from others that have, no crank triggers etc is correct i think the limiting factor is the injectors. I have heard of guys upping the fuel pressure with an adjustable regulator but in the end you will save a lot of time just using a better ecu and bigger injectors. Rover efi pump will be fine but you can use a bosch commodore in tank pump with a few mods. If you use a complete 3.9 system of a disco you should be ok with the matching ecu.Busta-P wrote:thanks for the reply, can you tell me what the limiting factors of using the 3.5 efi gear? i don't believe the 3.5's have a trigger system like a crank angle sensor etc do they, so i thought that the ecu would be fine, the injectors and fuel pump might not be up to scratch and would probably have to be upgraded, i was kind of hoping to retain the standard ecu, is there anything i can do so that i don't have to change it?Loanrangie wrote:Toorak Tractors in Melbourne sell the manifold spacers so you can use a 3.5/3.9 efi manifold, some have had reasonable success using the 3.5 efi gear with so fuel pressure tweaks but an aftermarket ecu is your best bet for tuneability, if you are good with a soldering iron then megasquirt diy ecu's offer a lot options to run coil packs and dual fuel maps.

Re: 4.4 efi conversion Q's
Yep sure can but I would go 3.9 hotwire if you can as others have said but and programmable ecu would be better like megasquirt.Busta-P wrote:Hey all i was just wondering when converting a 4.4 to efi can the setup off a 3.5 be used ? and if so where can i get the adapter plates?

I've done it in my 1991 Range Rover 5speed manual
I put rover 3.9 heads on as they have bigger valves than the 4.4 and you can then use rover alternator, power steer pump and air-con. (make sure you use the Leyland pushrods because there longer and are hollow so they oil the rocker gear)
I put Rover sump and pickup on as well because its bigger volume
I put the Rover timing cover on bolts straight on and gives you bigger water pump and higher volume oil pump than the standard leyland one.
You need to drill and tap a third hole for the rover engine mounts and modify the mounts slighty.
Put the 3.9 cam in with chevy lifters
Put ford mustang 4.6 injectors in they also have a 4 nozzle spray opposed to the rovers 1 and put in a adjustable fuel regulator
Had the Rover flywheel redrilled to fit the leyland and a spigot bush machined to fit
The extra height from the intake manifold adapter plates and the extra height of the 4.4 might cause clearance issues with the bonnet I have a 3" body lift so plenty of room
Half way through building the engine I got hold of a latter model 1996 3.9 (interim block) so I ended up putting the serpentine belt system on couple slight mods to get it to fit.
My HEI Dizzy would'nt fit so went back to standard dizzy but running megajolt now.
heres a link to one that was done and dynoed

did read up about the 4.4lt needing 30%more air than 3.5-3.9 and lifting plenum chamber up by a 1" or 2" spacer gives abit of xtra hp
or stroke a 3.5 with leyland crank
i have heard the motor above going ^^ .and running near straight twin pipes.use to sounds like a bikie club heading down the road lol
not as load now as he changed muffler choices
near water proof megajolt.got to be the way (that another thing on wish list or even a hei 1st)

magasquirt
arvo all,
does anyone have any clear info as to the actual model of megasquirt to use for this conversion. I have a 4.4 bought from TTC in braeside and know adrian quite well. i can get all the hardware required for the job and looking at doing it in the coming weeks. obviously its a big job i need the info on megasquirt as i dont want to go down the path of airflow meters and im getting an o2 sensor installed and all that. so any info would be greatly appreciated.
cheers simon

I bought my mega jolt from thease guys excellent to deal with and they are more than helpful. They do all the required parts to fit megajolt/megasquirt to the Rover V8
