Had a big weekend in the mud and now have issues with centre diff not dissengaging well thats what i think is happening. What i need to know to confirm this is: with the front drive shaft off and the centre diff off should I be able to turn the front output shaft or not? as it is i can not and can drive vehicle with centre diff lock off and front shaft disconected. I can hear the solenoid clicking from inside the vehicle but have no one to push button when im underneath to check at gear box. Its in an 91 80 series GXL turbo diesel.
Cheers Steve

I know of one person who broke the centre diff and the cdl being off didnt make any difference, it was locked....however....my first question to you is....does the light on the dash go on and off, or is it off all the time or is it on all the time???

bugger....that means you have broke the sun gears in the centre diff. The light is completely seperate to the lock....when the shaft moves, it contacts the switch that turns the dash "locked diff" light on, so it is working....the switch responsible for lighting the light is the one above the front output shaft.

I broke the centre diff in my cruiser, it didn't break the gear but one of the retaining pins, Which then was causing it to bind up and stay locked as such.
If you fit a marks part time kit it will remove the broken parts, well mine did anyway. Plus then you get part time 4wd as well.

If thats the case it may well be worth opening it up and having a look in there, then decide whether you still want awd or wanna go 2wd. I'm sure most people who have done a 2wd conversion will still keep the bits of the centre diff you pull out just in case (i know i have).
