Biggest tyre size for late model Defender 110
A mate of mine has got a Defender 110 and i am trying to convince him to get some rims & tyres for offroad work.
What is the largest tyre that will fit without mods? hopefully 33x12.5 will go
What size rim does he need? (i was thinking 15x8 but dont know what offset)

255/85's will fit on standard rims but rub slightly on the rear tray above the rear wheel and on the radius arms at the front. You can fix the front by adjusting the lock stop bolts (you lose a bit of turning circle) and you can fix the rear by taking the bump stops off and making up some packers to extend them 10 or 15mm or so (but you lose that amount of upward wheel travel)
Other than that they will fit fine and are a good choice for a 110, IMHO 12.5 is way too wide and about 10" to 11" is better.
Other sizes to consider are 265/75 (a bit less height) and 285/75 (about the same height but wide enough to have more fit problems)

I've got a 2001 TD5 110 Defender. The Oz Tomb Raider version.
It's been given a moderate ARB (OME) lift of about 55mm all round (will be going to 75mm in the next 2 weeks but thats a whole other story. Eg I just want a bit more lift )
I was running 255-85-16's on factory alloys with no problems at all (didnt rub even on full flex) but got bored... as we all do!
I had Eastern Wheel Works fab me a set of 16x8's with custom offset and fitted them with 305-70-16 Mickey Thompson Claws and Secondair Beadlocks...
The only rubbing now is the edges of the flares which I'm currently making extensions (spacers between body and flare to maintain factory look) for to cover the outer edges again!
With extended bump stops I have heard of people successfully running 34-10.5-16 Simex JT2s...

Landrovers... Nothing else comes close!
I have 285/75/16 (33") on disco rims modified to have 30mm less backspacing than std. The fronts are fine but the backs rub slightly at the lip where the flares meet the body. No big deal, but with 255/85's on the same rims it won't happen.
