A front mount intercooler on an aftermarket turbo'd L series diesel may be ok at highway speeds but be prepared for overheating dramas as it is a decent restriction in front of the already stressed radiator plus at slow speed a front mount and its plumbing will get sum shocking heat soak from the dirty cast iron oil burner.

B4 deciding to convert to 3RZ I was also goin to use a subaru WAIC setup, IMO a water to air setup is better as it allows less restriction on engine cooling, less plumbing, less lag and is far more resistant to heatsoak at slowspeeds.

Cheers
I run 13B-T with 1.5Bar boost (21PSI) and a rather large front mount intercooler (450mm * 300* 76mm ) and a modified fuel pump to match and a modified AIR CLEANER to TURBO PIPE. The LAG difference when we installed the INTERCOOLER vs none is minimal but does cause a slightly stronger cutin when it does (1800rpm to 4000 (normally 3200 is enough)) certainly wakes up the passengers. However just adding fuel will not make it work you need the air and the fuel mix to be correct else something will blow. RUnning hard without an intercooler will cause the engine to run hot in a warm climate. Also you really have to run coolant also and not just h2o in the radiator or anti freeze. The intercooler and night air and slightly moist the engine is sweet and running very very cool and very responsive (like what LAG).

It was noticiable that the engine water temp ran cooler like 1-2 needle widths and it is even better on a wet day or a cool moist night. Guess cooler air (25c is cold for me) and a 10 blade fan also helped.

I could have put a top mount intercooler in also and reduced the turbo lag as I now have plenty of room with the 7M turbo to do so I may even change to a top mount later but at present I want a WOLF in SHEEPS clothing still and want no attention to my battered truck by having a top mount sticking out of the bonnet.

I do a wide range of stuff from slow rock work to slow long hiill climbs road and track to MUD and this thing is fine until the radiator fills with mud then I have all sorts of heating problems. The heat in the engine bay is huge and you must consider how to get the hot air out and I have lifted the rear of the bonnet 1cm to allow hot air to escape especially for slow speed work. next is to relocate the 24V batteries to closer to the wings and and put alloy between the batteries and the inlet manifild and intercooler in piping. Drivable with 21PSI sure is on or off boost rock climbing or log bridges or mud or rocks or anything you toss at it it eats it.

As z()lyan will attest 21+PSI diesels really haul arse and his is more powerful than mine. The guy does not say what boost he is running now but he could easily go 1-2PSI higher for a intercooler to compensate and the necssary air/fuel mix. HOwever he must do his sums for the intercooler size else he will have serious lag or other issues.

I know someone is going to say don't believe you run 21PSI boost.

just wondering if anyone has turbo'd there car and then later on added an intercooler, How much lag did it create?

worth while doing? RESULTS???...

Cheers, HTH
Didn't think the 3L was a good donk to turbo from the research I did and talking to my mekanik.

Anyone care to add to that. My 3L has 349,000 on the clock totally original and looking to replace it with a highly modified 14B-T :)

21psi is High But a Modified Engine should take that ok,
Wonder How Long before we get the Dreamer say OH I run 30psi
As fpr the 3L Taking a Turbo and 12psi if he looks after it Ive seen stranger things happen
