The 2 hour job that took 7

Post by mowerman »

A bit of background first.

My 99 Triton v6 3litre petrol was getting a little sad. 280k on the clock, blowing smoke, using oil like a 2 stroke and missing badly under load. Can't afford a new one untill the kids finish school in 6 years.
So a month ago I went and got a 2nd hand donk with 120k on the clock.
Took me and a mate the 3 day long weekend to do the change over. And 3 cartons of grog. Maybe that was the problem.
But....This motor made me realise how bad the old one was.

On to today.

Yesterday I got the old fuel injectors cleaned.
Today I did the swap over........3 effin times.

Anyone who has looked under the bonnet of a vehicle built in the last 10 years will know what I mean.
Takes an hour to get all the crap off before you can get at the plugs and fuel injection.
Put the cleaned injectors in, all the stuff back on, fired it up, perfect.
Went for a drive. What a difference. Pull up in the driveway, get out, I smell petrol. A pool of fuel forming under the vehicle. SHITE.
Get the torch out. I can just see some of the injectors. Start the truck and I can just make out a mist of petrol comming from the middle injector on the left bank.

SO...Everything comes off again.
Pull that injector off the rail and the new O ring is kinked. Take an O ring off the other set of injectors Ive got and put it all back together.
Fire it up and petrol is still p**sing out. Same injector.

Pull it all apart again. Take the injector down to Repco after retrieving it from the gutter.
Buy 6 new O rings for $5. Replace all the O rings and put it all back together again.
Fire it up. Cautious look. No petrol leak. Time for a beer.
Take it for a run. No petrol leak. Another beer or 3.
No time left to do the clutch slave cylinder. Next weekend maybe.

And before anyone mentions it. NO I am not going to have a go at the mech who cleaned them and replace all the O rings.

His $10,000 cleaning machine didnt have an adaptor for my injectors. He couldnt flow test after the cleaning. But there was plenty of crap came out.

He didnt charge me a cent for the job.

Time for another beer.
