Hi Beam on = ALL LIGHTS OUT??

Post by bigbluemav »

Hi All

Not 4b related, but electrical!!

My little junker Laser (1991 KH) has an electrical problem. The first time I took it out at night, I found it had no instrument lights, no tail lights and when you switch to high beam, the headlights went out. However, when you flash the high beam, it works brilliantly.

The instrument and tail lights I fixed easily (fuse  ), but the high beam issue persists. I'm thinking the switch block (on the indicator stalk) is shagged, I just wanted to check to see if there could be any other likely reason BEFORE I go the trouble and expense of getting another indicator stalk/switch block.

Any assistance gratefully accepted.

See if there is a relay on your headlight circuit. Sounds like a bad earth to me.... Do you have driving lights too?

This sounds a bit like an issue I had in my Sigma a few years back. It drove me crazy for days, until I discovered a dud earth contact in a connector in a different part of the loom.

I doubt I would have found it without a wiring diagram - do you have a Gregory's manual?

Hi Scott

I just bought a Haynes manual for it so I'll check where the earth/s is/are in the high beam circuit.

There's no extra electrical accessories added, so I guess it'll just be a matter of trace and test! BUMMER!!

Ta though!

it sounds like the headlight switch... lasers dont have a relay I think and this is the problem, all the load of the high beams run through the switch contacts and over time they get dirty and burnt and once there is a load on your headlight switch you will loose all lights...

most switchs can be pulled apart and the contacts cleaned which should last you a couple of years or so...

My Girlfriend has a 91 laser that had the same problem.. pulled the headlight/dipper switch apart and cleaned the contacts with a nail file fixed all good..

Only had the car for a couple of hours after purchase was driving it home in the dark and flicked to high beam and boom no lights scared the crap outta me for a few seconds...
