Converting 3Y carby to EFI

Post by dans-paj92 »

Has anyone changed the 3Y-C motor to EFI??
Was just looking at the marks 4wd adaptors website and the 4Y motor came out in an EFI model. Can i get the head from a 4Y EFI and bolt it onto my 3Y motor to make it a fuel injected motor??
Or what else is needed??
Cheers

I'm pretty sure the heads are identical..
The easiest way would probably find a tarago with a 4Y-E and just swap the whole motor, otherwise you could probably just get the EFI gear from one and just bolt it up to your 3Y.. Cheap if you can find a wrecked one that a wrecker hasn't gotten to
The biggest hassle would probably be the fuel pump setup as you'd need a swirl pot unless you want to go to the trouble of swapping your fuel tank (EFI tanks have baffles to prevent fuel starvation).. a few later model 1st gen's had the 4Y-E motor so theirs would be ideal!
Apart from that there's just the wiring which would be pretty simple

yeah i had a feeling that the heads are identical.
The head gasket is gone in my 3Y and my carby needs a rebuild.
So i thought that the cost of converting it to EFI may be a better option than rebuilding the carby and replacing the head gasket.
There should be a power gain by converting to EFI and it puts an end to it starving itself of fuel on steep hills.

Does yours starve on hills? Mine never has, it will lose oil pressure before it fuel starves..? unless I'm not going up big enough hills

I had my carb rebuilt when I first picked up my runner and it only cost about $200 from memory.. and the gasket shouldn't cost you much.
I recommend finding a wrecked tarago so you can pilfer the EFI gear as I'm told it will have a tiny bit extra grunt but a lot better fuel economy
Dunno about you but I only get 320km to a tank running 31's :x
Let me know how it goes and which path you choose

There is a thread about this on here somewhere as I asked a similar question about the 4y as the carby always starved the cheapest and easiest way to stop the carby starving is to turn up your idle screw a bit
Back to the engine for about a grand you can get a 4y long motor as they are used in forklifts you may also be able to source the gas head of one of the forklifts.
The fuel injection does come of the torago and I am pretty sure it is mechanical so it should be easy to set up
If not v8s are getting cheap as chips I found a 253 set up for gas with all the gas bits except tank for 800 and it had only done 20k
If you dont have panel damage you ain't trying hard enough

unfortunately im a red P plater and can't drive v8s :bad-words:
and i seem to have to give it a bit more boot going up hills so that it doesnt conk out and sometimes even going down hills.
My speedo says i get about 350kms with 35s and my speedo is out by 20% so im really getting 420kms with an old carby, stock ratios and blown head gasket now.
cheers

Do you know if you get up close enough with the karcher, the side sticker on your car comes off.. Trust me i know first hand that it works. I did it to my other 4runner before i resprayed it.

Interesting, mine's pretty baked on, plus the paint has faded a bit so if it did come off there'd be a darker yellow stripe where the sticker was!!

3y...

Post by error »

Payed $20 for my head gasket about 6 months ago...
my understanding is that the only different thing about the 'y' motors is the stroke, so the 4y head should just bolt up....
but it never seams to be that easy does it....
Just want to play...........

x 2

And it's only 200cc difference anyway!!

And about the re-spray.. All my spare $ are tied up in the house i'm about to buy :D
So my mods are currently limited to low cost DIY! eg Fabrication!
A nice metallic burgundy would look nice though I reckon..

i paid $65 for a gasket kit containing rocker cover gasket, head gasket, exhaust gasket and intake gasket.
Not bad seeing they wanted $35 for the head gasket and $25 for the rocker gasket alone.
My other 4runner was burgundy before it got painted fire engine red.
