hey guys everything wet well swapping everything over bar one thing the engine cranks but dont start...its got spark but wont kick over anyone had simmilar problems the timing belt was put on correctly and everythig seems to be all good...the only sign i have that something could be wrong is that the positive battery terminal gets hot after a bit of cranking anything that i should tripple check or anything???

If its got spark make sure your plug leads are in the correct order, Make sure its firing on the compression stroke, Check for fuel delivery, And double check all timing and alignement

The hot terminal isn't necessarily a sign of a problem, but you should clean the connection to be sure.

Can you work out if you have fuel pressure? I'm not sure how you'd do it on a Paj engine. On my Sigma (with Magna EFI) I can hear the injectors firing - any idea if yours are?

For a start, check the spark sequence. On my wife's Magna and my Pajero, the firing order is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The big question is "Which one is No 1?" I had a hell of a time sorting that out because the manual does not specifically say which bank is No 1. That would be my first effort at problem solving. Then check the fuel. if you have fuel and spark, then it is only a matter of timing the two and it should go.

As an aside, I did the plugs and leads on the Pajero. When it came to connecting the leads up, I couldn't get it right. Backfiring everywhere, no power, no go - the lot. Eventually, to my shame, my wife came out and said "What are those numbers over there (on the manifold)? I said it is probably the Mitsu part number for the manifold. Wrong again! when I looked at them, it said 1,4 3,6,2,5 and when I connected the leads to the coils in that sequence, lo and behold it fired. The problem was the sequence of the 3 separate coils it certainly wasn't in my way of thinking.

just a thought... check that you have got a decent earth from the motor to the chassis, chassis to body..and from battery to body dont think it would be your starting issue but it may cause the power lead on the battery to heat up if your trying to push a lot of current (amp) draw down a badly earthed system (lol I did that on my winch when the earth strap had almost broke off and was hanging on by a few threads)

Dont forget that the rotor position is offset to the pin on the distributor cap. Normally you point the rotor at number one on the cap and its pointing at one, not with these things. If you flip the cap over you will see that the point were the rotor needs to be pointing is offset to the cap terminal you are aiming for.

The firing order is marked on the cap. to align the rotor in the correct spot; turn the cap upside down and mark on the outside of the cap the point were the rotor needs to point for number one. Its offset about one tooth from were it appears to align from the top.

Sounds like you have HT leads going to the wrong plugs. If this is the case, it will backfire thru the air cleaner.

If they are correct, check for cross firing between the leads or for sparks from the leads to earth. This can still cause backfires of it can cause misfires. It is best to do this in the dark - the leads stand out really well if they are arcing to earth or crossfiring. If all else fails, remove the distributor cap and check for tracking inside the cap.
