Hey Guys,

I need some answers regarding sierra transfer cases. I pulled mine out of my 1995 sierra on the weekend and cracked it open, and it's chain driven... is that normal? I'm thinking about installing some reduction gearing and a roctoy ring, so i need to know what sort of a transfer case i've got before i go and order some parts...

These are the only pics i've got which sort of show the case. The transfer case is at my mates place in bit at the moment, so i can't take any decent pics... The zook has a vitara motor and box, that's why it's open at the back...

Sounds like you have a coily case under there.

You would need to either buy the chain transfer gears (not that common) or get a leafy case and associated parts to swap it in there,

These chain driven tcases from the coilys make a great anchor!!!!!!!

Get yourself a leafy tcase and then buy yourself some reduction GEARING.

yeah i think it's a coily transfer case... i've done a bit of searching on the forum and mine has the balancer on the mount. You can see the edge of it in the top pic.

Why are they so bad? Why do you guys think that a coily transfer case would be put in instead of a leafy one?

What is the go with the coily type transfer cases?
Do they have a particular reputation?
Are replacement internal parts expensive?

I think it's just that leafy one are dime a dozon and there are alot lower after market gears avaliable for the leafy one's by memory I think there's only one ratio avaliable for the coily but I my be wrong

I had no idea the coil sprung sierras went to a different transfer case, is this because they are Jimny running gear?

yeah they run a very similar transfer to the jimny's. the jimny reduction does fit in the coily transfers i think.

Interesting.
The Ford Couriers, Rangers, Mazda Bravos, some Jeeps, etc all have a chain style transfer.

What else is required to change them over?

Do the shafts bolt straight up? or a different yoke?
Are the mounting points roughly similar?

rpm gave the car to joe to get him to do most of the modifications that have been done. it is not up to joe to publically explain his choice of the transfer case, if rpm feels that everyone can or should know he can let them know.

was giving him the history of the vehicle as i know the previous owner who had it to start with before any mods!

Hey guys,

I ended up giving the previous owner of my zook a call regarding the mysterious transfer case... he basically said it was installed by the original owner. Not sure why this was done and it will have to remain a mystery...

You guys are probably wondering why the transfer case was removed in the first place... On they way back from wheeling last week it starting making some grating noises and crazy vibrations through the cabin when i took off from a standstill. It only happens when i dump the clutch and give it a bit of right pedal action. It feels completely normal if i take off from a standstill and let the the clutch out smoothly... Once moving the zook feels normal and will cruise at speed no worries...

So my mate (he's a mechanic) and i took the transfer case out and cracked it open on the weekend to have a look see... when i drained the oil out before removal, a ball bearing come out with the oil, so i thought it wouldn't be good. My mate has striped the case down and nothing is wrong with it. We think the chain may have stretched and this is what is possibly causing the noise. We're checking this out tonight... So what do you guys think is the matter with the transfer case? I don't really want to replace the case with a gear driven case, cos if it's just the chain, then it's an easy fix.

I need to reinforce the transfer case somehow, by either using a roctoy ring or by buying or fabbing up a trasfercase cradle? what can you recommend? Do the roctoy rings fit the coily cases? I've tried to get in contact with Chris who makes them. I will try again today... I'm not 100% sure if there are any off the shelf options available to strengthen up the case... Now my zook has air-lockers front and rear with 5.1:1.0 R+P gearing in the diff. So there is a lot of force being placed on the transfer case and mounting points. Putting reduction gearing in the transfer case is NOT an option as it will completely stuff up how the car has been set up in terms of gearing and driveability. The way it is at the moment is awesome... i love it :twisted:

Joe has recommended twin transfers and auto box, but i sadly have other priorities and can't justify spending the funds on the zook.

So i need a new chain for my transfer case... After calling Suzispares I was informed that it is a genuine replacement part and i would need to get it direct from my local suzuki dealer. I got a price off the suzuki dealer for the chain... Are you sitting down? $504 for a chain... what the? I ended up ordering a 2nd hand transfer case from the wreckers out of a 98 model coily. It will arrive 2moz... and i'll bolt it all back togehter over the weekend.

Throw yours to the shit house, buy a leafy case for about $150 and use it. If you can find one get a 1lt case (one with the switch)as they have better gearing. there are a heap of different ratio combinations around and gears don't have the issues of chains. Don't go to the expense of getting dual cases and trying to set them it's just a pain in the arse. Really do you need 20 forward gears in a Sierra, it ain't no prime mover
