Hey guys,
I have an 83 RR with a 3 speed auto. I understand I have either an LT230L or an LT230R transfer case. What is the differents between the 2 if any? And will this transfer case bolt strait onto a RR 5 speed manual gear box out of an 1986 model? Or is it different?
Just asking because i'll be doing a manual conversion shortly..

You have an LT230R, R signifies roller bearing as oposed to later 230T's which use tapered rollers. You can bolt up an LT77 or R380 spd, the 230R also has the highest high range gear of all landys at 1.003/1, others have 1.22/1 or in defenders 1.4/1 . A ZF 4spd auto will also bolt up.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

110 countys with isuzu diesel had a 1.003:1 LT230T from 1985-on.

The LT77 isn't the world's strongest box, but they will last OK in a rangie if you look after it. 5th gear is weak and has oiling issues. Also add an oil feed tube to the t-case PTO cover if you don't have a cross-drilled input gear.

One LT77 is not the same as the next. The early suffix boxes are not very strong. Later ones are as strong as an R380.

The LT 77 was introduced to the Landrover range in approx 1983 with the suffix D box and was developed over the years to the suffix H which was last used in 1994.
The D and E are very similar the only difference being the reverse gear was a little fatter in the E,
When they went from E to F larger layshaft bearings were used.
The G was further improved by all the gear teeth including the pinion getting approx 20% thicker. Also a much wider pump was used to increase the lubrication and cope with the fact that some of the LT 77"s were now being supplied oil cooled, ie V8 NAS 90, 3.9 RR Classic and the 3.5 EFI Discos.
The H (termed the LT 77S) was the same as the G in terms of strength but used a different syncro set up called the "Double Syncro", In reality it didn"t work much better.

Adapter is just the extension housing of the box and yes TF727 and ZF use a different spud shaft but otherwise all will interchange.nottie wrote:Dont the LT230s use different adapters for a Auto and a Manuel As well is input shafts??

OK then i have a transfer here with a completly diffrent looking adapter housing and spud shaft that i cannot identify. The shaft is about 50mm longer and has a bigger input spline cut into it that wont fit any rover output splines that i have here. Ill try get some pics up as someone may identify it.
It certainly looks like a gearbox adapter and not an auto adapter though.
