fridge wiring

Post by chunderlicious »

just got a new arb fridge and am about to wire it into the back of my ute.

should i remove the cigi plug and use an anderson plug or will the cig plug be ok in the rough and dirty/wet exterior? this will also determine the size of cable i run as i have alot of 8 gauge wire lying round and if i do anderson plugs ill use this wire to the plug (incase i add more in the rear later) but if the cig plug is fine ill use some smaller wire.

also, what size fuse should i run?

thanks
Evan

Do not use a standard cigarette plug for a fridge. They're a reliability problem waiting to happen.

Anderson plugs are good, but probably overkill for an ARB fridge. I use a Merrit plug on my fridge, and am happy with the performance. My father & brother have the same, and never had issues.

Edit: Missed the "exterior" bit. Anderson plugs are probably most reliable for that type of application, although some "weather resistant" Merrit plugs & sockets are available if you can provide some shelter.

The fuse is there to protect the wire in case of a short circuit. Your fridge wiring should be large enough to handle 15+ amps, but the fridge should only draw 4-5 amps (excluding start surge) - so a 10A fuse should be fine.
