Blue slips and home made rear bar with tow hitch
Hi Guys,
Has any one had any experience with getting a fourby blue slipped with a home made rear bar that has a hayman reece style tow hitch incorperated?
Is it one of the checks that they do to see that the tow bar has a "compliance plate" type thing on it?
Will they knock me back?
I am in a bit if a bind because i cant put a stocko rear bar on it because the mounting points have changed. ie the bit that the std bar bolted to got trimmed off so the custom bar could tuck up closer for better departure angle.
Anybody got any suggestions or been in this situation before?
Cheers
Chris.

Good point about taking the tonge out, i will definitely do that.
I hope the guy that blue slips it is ok with it, technically its not legal is it?
I dont think taking the whole bar off is a solution, would'nt they knock it back for not having a rear bar?
The rest off the car is mickey mouse, and the bar that is there is a bazillion times stronger than the hayman reese that was on it (cut it up to use the 65x65 rhs)
For those interested the hayman was 75x75x3 RHS held on by 6pcs M10 bolts, the new one is 125x75x6 RHS held on by 12pcs M16 bolts.
Do you think i will have dramas with the inspection will i be sweet?
Thanks for reading

Not sure if its relavent, but made a few gooseneck (5th wheel) tow hitches at work for 4wd's. We got the mechanic across the road (blue slip inspector and notoriously hard on checks) too check them out and he was fine with them. As long as they were obviously strong enough and mounted correctly, he didn't have a problem.
you may get away with it on a car...if it looks ok
but any towbar now has a tag attached to it, all engineered
if you fabricate a towbar for a truck hayman reese style, as you cant just buy them off the shelf except for a multifit one that requires welding
it has to be signed off by an engineer same as any other mod
it worked out cheaper for me to buy the multifit as it was already engineered when bought. sure i coulda made it for cheap but it didnt have that tag and i was then faced with having to go see the engineer for it

All towbars made from 1992 on, or fitted to vehicles built from 1992 on have to comply with ADR 62, including having the appropriate markings either on a plate or stamped directly into the bar.
If the bar was correctly marked, there would be no problem.
The options are to either get it engineered, including marking it as specified by the engineer, or to stamp the bar clearly with "recovery only. Not for towing" and, as suggested above, put a recovery hitch into the socket.
