Comp Series for Mackay, CQ, NQ & FNQ

Comp Series for Mackay, CQ, NQ & FNQ
Hey all, looking at starting a comp series in NQ. Thoughts at the moment are to run 3 smaller comps during the year and having the final at Easter as we did this year. For the series events, at this stage I am looking at 1 class to start with. The final at Easter may or may not include a stock class, depending on the number of people that want to race.
We will probably look at starting a club for these events as if all goes to plan, we will be able to get insurance easier and cheaper. All that want to compete will need to be members of the club.
What are your thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea. Their are more than enough comp trucks in CQ - NQ to support the event & looking at how many guys come up from down south to compete in Metcalfs event and the CQ Challenge, you should easly get the numbers. As far as being members "a" club, if you are a member of an existing 4WD club that is incorporated and has its own insurance and the event was a club trip i am sure that your insurance would NOT cover it if it was a timed event. If it was an untimed event your club insurance would cover it. If you wanted to have insurance for a timed event (and you would) you would need to apply and get it specificly for that event. If you want to have a chat call me ON 0407NISSAN.
Good to see the support so far.
Hulk, as far as being part of an other club & having that insurance cover you, I don't think that it will work for what I am looking at.
I am looking at starting and running the club under a CAMS banner. Through the way that our events would run, things like ROPS (cages) will not manditory, at least to start with. Under a CAMS banner, they will cover the insurance, but this will probably only cover "club" members.

comp
It would be great to have other comps to run in local rather than travel a long way to run in the comps down south. What would be good is a 7 day event like OBC and Cliffhanger for CQ/NQ.

The EFS XI is on in rocky in september. 8 days of offroad magic to quote the organiser. It has been running for a number of years at cruiser park but has now relocated to seonee park, rocky, and some other surrounding properties. While it might not have the same following as the southern comps i can assure you it is just as tough or tougher.
Central and northern qld is already a force to be reackoned with at most of the southern comps now, so more exposure to comps up this way can only be good.
Running under any established group whether it be cams, ccda or 4wd qld affiliated club etc will require you to become a member of their association as such with all events run to there rules. The CQ Offroad Challenge is run by the CQ offroad club in rocky, which is 4wd QLD affiliated club but we still need extra insurance to cover the weekend because it is a timed event.
If you want to have a chat brent, give me a call on 0408 500194.
Cheers Davo

XI
The XI is good but as we all know Dave dont like mud and not many speed stages at his events would be good to have an event with more mud more speed and prize money

Just been on holiday's just past Bowen.
It's GODS land up there. Rocks, Rocks and more Rocks!!
We've got a beach hut at Cape Upstart and I would love to take my rig over there for a play. The old man's Gen 1 Lux diesel just doesn't cut it. Alright for pulling the boat out of the water but thats about it.
On the way up about 15mins out of Bowen heading north - looked to the left and and nearly pulled me pud. Nice comp area. plenty of everything there. Rocks, logs, hills etc.
Bit far to to the rig though. 14 hours towing a boat is enough.

Hey Brett.
Is a great idea and like many have said before there are more than enough rigs around to run this sort of series.
Just be careful with the Cams affiliation as I believe that you will get caught with motors bigger than 6 litre and no turbos about 3.5 as that is the rules in Offroad Racing.
Just something to be mindful of.
Definately talk to Davo and the CQ Offroad boys. They run a brilliant comp and have all the issues sorted that they have delt with in the last couple of years!
We'll definately support this kind of event with our OFFROAD CARTEL gear and run a car if they are together.
Build it and they will come...
Also XWC is a great event but we don't need another clone... work out how to make yours a different winch comp... weither that be longer stages... different points... more attempts a driving... whatever but make it your own...
That's my 2 cents anyway.
NOW GET TO IT!
2010 is just around the corner!

Thanks aagin folks.
There are a lot of things to be sorted yet, but all that you have said will be taken on board. I will consalt as many people as possible to see how we run future events.
At this stage, we may have a practice comp this year again, but we will wait and see. The Mackay Off-Road Challenge will be run at Easter again next year, which I am looking at being the series final in following years.
I am looking at obtaining other sites for events at the moment, by for the time being, I will run what I can the the site we competed at this year.

i would come north to spectate more speed/mud/distance orientated events. i like the short courses that metcalfe and stirlo run, but dont make it the same!!! Check out the Engel winch series for inspiration
still based on a winch challenge but i think you should be able to try and drive any hill you want, any number of times. Its your loss if you DNF cause you tried 1 hill 10 times instead of winching. Draw car numbers from a hat for running order (or similar) to keep that part fair.

Folks, judging by the threads on here, a comp series up here would get the support we need to kick it off.
I have spoken to an other motor racing club in our area that are very keen to help us our in getting this type of racing happening. This club also has a site that they currently race rally on and have told us we can build our own tracks on the property if we want.
The nuts and bolts of how this will work is that we are going to start a club. The club will come under the Whitsunday Sporting Car Club which is a CAMS approved club. We are going to run events under a banner that doesn't require role cages etc.
To compete in these events, driver and Navy with need to be part of the club, which will cost approx $60 per year, and anyone driving must hold a CAMS licence suitable for the type of event, which cost $44 per year. So for approx $100 per year, plus race nom fees which should be cheaper than most of the other events out there, you will be able to race all of our events, plus other special events, like flat track etc, that we will also hold through out the year. These fees will cover the insurance that we will be getting through CAMS.
Obviously you WILL NOT need to live in the Mackay/Whitsunday area to be part of the club.
From those that I have spoken to already about this, the responce os very positive, but before I complete this process, I need to know that we are going to get the support to make it a viable thing.
If you would like to discuss this futher, you can contact me, Brent on 0414 455 542.

I'm all for this Bear but be very careful with your CAMS affiliation... It's fine if that's the way you want to go just look into it carefully...
Cages have to be built to spec which isn't necessarily QLD Trans approved...
Also motors have heavy limits on them... almost every XWC competitor would be out... no turbos above 3.5... that includes deisel.... and no motors over 6 litre... that is no 383 strokers or anything else.... just a warning as I'd love to do some class 8 in my Jeep but no love as the cage and bits that do pass XWC don't pass Cams...
And those motor restrictions would hurt every one of the comp cars in Rocky...
Maybe I got the rules wrong but you need to double check...
Thanks mate

Hey guys, I think the wording of "CAMS" has thrown a few people off. The class that I am looking at running comps under is "Motorkhana", & possiblly "Khanacross" if I can get approveal from CAMS to make a couple of minor changes to the format.
This is not a class such as Class 8 etc, it is more of a club level event. It will not be recognised under CAMS as a state or national class. It does not require cages, nor does it have a motor restriction. The main restrictions are on track layout etc, which for most of our type of racing will be fine.
I need to complete all of my home work, but at this stage I want to give everyone the costs involved with it so you can decide if this is something you want to be part of before I go to far.
Please understand, I AM going to get this happening, wether it be under a CAMS banner or any other. I am looking for sirrious interest before I go to much further.

Re: ..
to run a event under ccda is to hard as all marshalls have to be members of ccda and so do competiters we looked at that for cq challenge and decided against it .swb_ute wrote:How about CCDA?
cheers crazy eyes
if it aint forced it wont go
Sound's like every one is in favor of this event, me included. But it needs to be a stand alone event like the CQ challenge and XWC (as far as rules and format goes) we dont need another copy of allready existing events but if that's how it end's up it will have a huge name to live up to, as these two events are some of the best in the country (just my opinion). Brent you realy should have a talk to Brad Dukes from CQ offroad or, Dave Metcalf from Extreme 4x4 sports, as these people as well as there dedicated team allready run extremly sucesfull events in QLD and NSW, and these events are not run under CAMS or CCDA banners, yet they still have insurance and a very strict set of rules for competeters and vehicles alike. I am realy looking foward to more events in CQ and NQ but too many restrictions in vechiles will mean that allready built comp trucks will not be able to compete due to CCDA/CAMS rules which is a shame (which probably means your 80 series with a 5L is out). Dont mean to bitch but hats off to you if you can pull of an event series that can be talked about everywere. Mick.
I started life with nothing, and I still have most of it!
Hey Mick, that's for your comments.
I had the privlage of talking to Dave today about this and he brought up some very good points. He is having some people he knows contact me to discuss the set up further.
To me, the CAMS idea seems very easy to race under, by I am still to get answers on question I have asked of them.
I will be contacting the insurance company that covered our event this event to see what we can do as a full years preimum.
Regardless of which way we go, it will happen & it will be the easiest process for everyone to compete. I don't want this to put people off or have restrictions so that big rigs can't compete.
