Ok I am about to take the Roza in for its first service with a mechanic. Apart from the oil/filter change and probably the plugs is there anything else with the roza that I should get them to check and replace? I want to keep the car in good shape mechanic wise. I know this may sound like a stupid question to ask but I just want to be througha

Unless you have a service history there are a lot of things that will have an unknown service date:

Front wheel bearings
Front diff oil
Rear diff oil
Gearbox oil
Transfer case oil
Power steering fluid flush and change
Uni joints grease and steering linkages grease
Radiator coolant
A/C service
Air filter element
Brake fluid flush
Clutch fluid flush
Brake pads

Oh, and blinker fluid and muffler bearing grease

And get the headlight timing checked too.

Another thing with the Feroza's is to get the valve clearances adjusted. If there's no service history it most likely hasn't been done for a while. The engine will run better and be a lot quieter afterwards.

Is there a sticker on the engine somewhere saying when the timing belt was changed last? (or in the log books if you've got any?) It's supposed to be changed at 80000km (or is it 100000km?)- but if you haven't got a record somewhere saying it's been done do it. It's a big $$$ job, but better than having your engine self destruct from the belt snapping.

Also get all your diff, gearbox and transfer case oils changed. The front hubs can be adjusted and there are lubrication points throughout the suspension and drivetrain that should be greased.

Get the rear brake shoes checked and inspected (wheels need to be taken off and some disassembly as they're drum brakes- can't just do a visual check like the fronts)

Get the clutch cable adjustment checked too.

Clutch is a cable clutch - so not necessary.

I would get the oils changed over first. The other things can be done as each service is needed (read: dollars are available).

Blinker fluid..... probably check for leaks first. If the blinkers are working well, should be okay.

Muffler bearing. If it's noisy, may need to have it looked at.

Good thinking 99 can be really good for power to get the valve timing checked. Be careful with the cover - if the bolts are over tightened, it will break. I went through two covers over 3 months.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. When I first bought the car we changed the diff oil and greased a few things but I will get them to check the other things mentioned.

I have checked the timing on the headlights and the blinker fluid myself and they are just fine so I won't be doing that this time

If you do get the timing belt replaced, get the belt tensioner, cam seal, crank seal and all other belts replaced aswell.

It will be easier to do those things then.

Should be done @ 100k It only cost me $200 on top of a service when I had it done, but then my mechanic is a top bloke Could cost a bit I guess, depends where you get it done. Do get it done though if it hasn't been Slip in a reground cam while you're at it, top opportunity for it

Genuine Daihatsu timing belt was around $54 when I bought one last year.

All up including doing the valve clearances, changing diffs/ gearbox/ transfer case/ engine oils, checking rear brakes, adjusting front hubs, greasing bits and pieces, changing the timing belt etc I paid $330 to have mine done.( I supplied engine oil, filter and timing belt)

The timing belt is a must- that's why I ended up buying a Feroza- my last car's belt snapped prematurely and lunched the engine. It was a Daihatsu too and the belt had only done 60000km- so don't leave it until 100000km!!! It's not worth the risk if you don't know the servicing history.

Ok service has been done and he checked everything out (changed the oils, checked the oils, greased everything, put some injector cleaner in the fuel, checked the brakes etc) cost me $90.00 all up. If any of you ever need a service done in Gympie (yeah I know chances are pretty much nil ) go to W & H Autos on the highway - top place and top mechanics. My car actually has a bit more power today I have noticed

Good find, I took mine in to have the same done about a year and a half ago to a 4wd place, boy did I get done over bad! The b*steds quoted me $150 absolute tops, I went in to get the thing, and the guy looks at me when I asked him how much and he said " Ahhh, it's had alot of work donnne, ahh total is $ 435.
The invoice stated simple things like airfilter $80. thats over 3x the cost from Toyota, everything was 3x as dear, they charged me $12.50 to put water in my window washer which was already 3/4 full, shiat like that, and labour was the biggest fee of all! I had the same service as you, they only replaced air filter, oil and filter, spark plugs, checked brakes and diff/ transfer oil, reset the timing, nothing I could'nt have done myself, so I do it all myself now.
