New dobinson coils leaning drivers side

Post by Glennb »

Hi all has anyone else had this problem with there GU 3" lift dobinson coils leaning to the drivers side. I do have them in correct (I presume front right is drivers side...) it leans lower around 10mm in the front and 20mm in the rear. I understand the fuel tank is on the right , wheel carrier etc, but I though this is why they mark the springs left and right side so they tension up the springs on the heavier side. I am on LPG would this make a difference and Ive also gained 3.5" of lift (4"+ incl sag) cant say Im real happy with them to be this inconsistent.

nah the dobinson coils are tagged ass about.

Swap all your coils left to right and it will be fine.

We ran into this problem only a few weeks back on a 3" 80series lift

I had a few batches mid last year where almost every set of coils was labelled incorrectly left to right. Apparently they get some real winners working in the factory up in rocky. Just check the taller one is one the drivers side and should all be good.

cheers

get them swapped back over, and then send the invoice of the job to swap them back straight to dobinsons.

Not in this case, swapped the front over today and I lost another 5mm on the drivers side and it raised another 5mm on the passenger side :bad-words: not sure it I should stuff around with the back now thinking I will be waisting my time. Also all the springs seemed to be t he same height. Thinking I will be sending an email asking whats going on.

I ve had 3" dobinson coils in my gq for less than 12mths about a month after fitting these the passenger side rear sagged about 25mm!! took it back to em they said leave it with us for the day so i did picked it up and they told me the chassis was twisted!! :bad-words: needless to say i was not a happy camper ! So i took the truck to a panel shop that specializes in straightening chassis ' they crawled over it for about half an hour and said it was one of the straightest they had seen ! I won' t be buying dobinsons products again!! :bad-words:

Interesting. Seems plenty of people love Dobinsons coils and others are not impressed.

I had a 3" lift in my GU and the drivers side rear sat 25mm lower than the rest. I swapped coils and mucked around, got a replacement set under warranty and ended up fitting a spacer to fix it, untill I saved some more cash and fitted megalift coils and I have never been happier. Better flex, holds a load better and the ride is sooo much better. Dobinsons suck.

As stated just check the higher side goes on the drivers side of a nissan, dont take for granted they are labelled correctly.
Toyota 80-100 the higher side should be fitted on the passenger side.
This is standard though all brands of coils.
Mistakes happen so it is possible the coils are labelled wrong.
Over the years we have had a few trucks come in with bent chassis, not saying this is the problem in this case.
We have also seen faulty springs in Tough dog, EFS, king, dobinson and i am sure all brands have suffered from the same problems time to time, Just depends if the manufactured admit it and correct the problem.
Talk to the shop they come from and they should hopefully help correct the issue. ;)

Ok, I have just received an email from Glenn. I have tried calling a couple of times, Glenn will call me when he gets the message and we will sort out his problem.

I will start by saying to anyone who ever purchases anything that if you have any sort of problem try calling the person who sold the stuff to you first before you post up on a forum and before you start spending money on coil spacers. (If a customer does need coil spacers I give them away)

Now that we are selling a lot coils for the GU Patrols, even though most work out just fine, we are finding that a few GU Patrols are sitting lower on the drivers side because of the extra weight of the fuel tank, spare tyre, battery and we have found that GU drivers are fatter. :D

Because of this we are now going to get some coils especially made to compensate more for this extra weight on the drivers side for the GU's. Each vehicle will still sit differently but it is about keeping most vehicles level. Please note that 90% of coils sold to GU Patrols do sit quite level but I know we can improve on that.

For Glenn's situation he wanted a soft 3" lift coil that would sag down to a 2.5" lift and I was told he wanted it setup for LPG and 100kg + of camping gear and winch. Glenn has not yet got the 100kg of camping gear in the vehicle or the winch plus he has only had the stuff about a week and it takes a bit of time before it will settle so when it is all finished he will have less then a 3" lift. It sounds like Glenn's original springs were very sagged which would make the 3" lift coil seem very tall.

For the 3" lift coils that Glenn has on the rear, when loaded with less then 200kg, I don't think I have ever had a warranty claim and we have sold hundreds of them.

The rear part number in questions is C45-309T for those in the know. I know they are not a soft coil normally but with over 200kg in the back I wouldn't go any softer. The front coil is C45-310.

For the regular person who plans to carry what Glenn plans I would be setting you up with heavier duty front coils and most likely heavier duty rear coils.

Mega lift coils are made by Lovells and Tough Dogs by Kings.

I have considered for a long time now that I had a lucky escape almost buying Dobinsons coils for the GQ via post from Brisbane 3 years ago, now I know I did!!

I ended up with Kings bought locally at the spring rate I wanted and needed instead of 'recommended' to me almost as one size fits all and they have simply been great in every respect.

I went the Dobinson shocks bought locally and although harsh and agricultural have not put a foot wrong.

I still sell Lovells and Kings coils because I think they are quite fine for a 2" lift or less but for 3" lift stuff and up, if you knew what you were talking about you really wouldn't be suggesting that you escaped the Dobinsons coils.

Having said, that are a couple of part numbers I don't use that they have in the catalogue but there are more then a couple I wouldn't use with Kings and Lovells, but as I said overall not bad coils.

Sweet, in this thread we are talking about the common Dobinsons 3" lift coil and not the flexy coils.

On another note, Glenn and myself are now in contact.

Something that is a bit funny with Glenn's kit and quite a few other GU's over the years is his GU going by the measurements he has given me does seem to sit about an inch higher then other Patrols.

It would be worthy to start another thread to see how many others have had the same issue.

I have spoken to Dobinsons and we are getting some special build coils which have a bigger drivers side coil for the GU's.

My personal experience with Dobinsons is that they have gone out of their way for me, many more times then I can count and put up with all of my special build flexy coils.
