v8 conversion advice

Post by pootrol »

hey need some advice. after making a fatal mistake by getting rid of my 4by and getting a new hilux i realised its not going to give any thrills off road cos its a nice car.

enter mate with 86 dual cab td2.4 lux, motor shagged and me with 253 v8 laying in shed. i know i can put this in but are the diff ratios gunna be alright and are the gearboxs gunna blow every drive. i may tow a fibre glass half cab with it and beach and bush bash it but i usually dont drive something to destruction. are there any big issues.

Gearbox will probably blow! depends how you drive it. But even if you take it easy it still may blow. The standard gearbox in my lux didn't blow with a 308 but it was replaced with a dyna (marks 4wd) when i found a cheap one. Your lux should have 4.5 diff gear which will fine for the bush, unless your doing lots of highway i'd just leave it. Particularly if you are going to run 33-35 inch tyres.

I honestly reckon the cheapest way to do the conversion is to buy a lux already converted (rolled/motor blown or bit rough) you might be lucky and find one with a dyna in it already! The basic conversion kit isn't that dear but once you mod a radaitor, exhaust, accessory brackets, p/s lines(if you have it) all starts to add up!

dont waste your time with a 253.

buy a complete damaged v6 VN commodore auto for 300 and use the engine/transmission computer in your hilux. sell teh rest of teh car in parts to make some $$ back.
then
sell the 253 for scrap value around 300 if yoru lucky.

then wait around for a marks adapter for the vn auto to hilux transfer to come up or but it new for around 1200 and yoru on yoru way to a good engine conversion for a hilix.

If the V6 is better then the 253 must be a total pos :?

yeah the v6 rips compared to even a standard 308 little alone a 253. they are one of the worst donks but im only looking at the v8 noise and i dont want too much ticker as it might start to cause grief with the rest of the drive train. its more for cruising and slow off road work. the vehicle wont have a stereo or side windows so i cant think of anything better than listening to the v8 in the bush. thanks for the input fellas.... :P

you have obviously never driven a hilux with a V6 and one with a 253.

if you go down the commodore v6 and auto route read this

flyinwall wrote:if you want to put the 3.8 into the jack and you have an auto then the the comodore 3.8 will bolt straight up to the auto bellhousing but you will need to modify the jack torque converter (or just the feet so it will bolt up to the v6 flex plate) and then do the engine mounts and wiring and your all set to go but remember this only works on the automatic transmission as it is a slightly different pattern to the manual bellhousing i hope this helps others out there

this also works with any vehicle with an asin warner auto g/box as the 94 jackeroo/rodeo auto bellhousing will bolt to this g/box and these g/boxes are found in a variety of cars including toyota's so if you have a car with an asin warner auto then all you need is a bellhousing from a 94 jackaroo/rodeo and a slightly modified converter and your in buisiness without having to spend $$$$$$ for a marks addaptor
so if you want the commodore v6 find a aisian warner auto and a jackaroo/rodeo v6 bellhousing and your almost there
