the air in your intake is being sucked into your engine, therefore the intake pipe is under a constant vacuum. with a negative pressure (or vacuum) in the diffs, you increase the chances of water getting sucked in passed the axle seals when you do a water crossing.
It is like a concertina rubber bellows, it expands when the oil gets hot and retracts when it cools, complete sealed system
, Polaris uses a really cool diaphragm version on some of its 4 wheelers, that looks a bit less vulnerable.
