how warm does your tb42 get?
how warm does your tb42 get?
after a new head and a cooling system flush my tb42 seems to get almost 2 thirds of the way up the guage when its revving fairly hard, like a long greasy hill or even when your pushing fairly hard. is this normal? it is on lpg and turning 35s if that would influnce this to.

Mine sits at about 1/3 most of the time. I've seen it get to 1/2 way up the gauge once, and that was boot to the floor on a long climb in 36+ deg temps.. The fan normally locks up somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 and drags it back down to 1/3 pretty quickly.
Having said all of that, lots of people recommend not trusting the Nissan gauge..

I'm not sure why people worry. The engine is made to run anywhere up to the red zone.....
my old tb42 would run up past 3/4 on steep muddy hills on 34's, but would come back reasonably quickly when at the top, or stopped. My issue was that the head behind the water pump was slightly corroded and meant that the water pump couldn't get to full pressure. Still ran perfectly for years and still is running perfectly on 35's regularly.
It is also on gas.

when you got your head changed did you
A: bleed the system properly? ( dont expect every mechanic to know how to bleed it properly)
B: flush the radiator by removing the end tank and cleaning it properly
C change the fan clutch with a new one
D fit a new themostat.

i got paranoid last summer and fitted an aftermarket water temp guage, mine will happily sit on about 82-84dec C during normal running, pushing it hard whilst wheeling it can climb upto 90-95 but it comes down quickly when just idling...in summer when its 35+ it gets a bit hotter but always cools down quickly.
have done everything except for the fan clutch.jessie928 wrote:when you got your head changed did you

the reason it cracked a head in the first place was the radiator was 70% blocked, i had only owned the car for about 2 months before it let go at dargo. radiator was professionaly flushed

i would consider a 3core radiator,
i replaced my standard one with one never got hot again this was on my old 88tb42
also yours is deul feul yes?? would recomend 4x4 wheeling on petty only
as lpg burns hotter works motor harder, more prone to cracking head on lpg working hard, for this reason i never put my GQ on lpg

but yes, LPG does burn hotter but its not an excuse to pay 120 a litre instead of 45cents.

it should run at 81 or 82 degrees from memory according to the service manual.
You could replace the whole cooling system componentry. You could run on Petrol as it burns cooler. You could spend loads of money doing upgrades and mods and buying new parts.
If you don't have heaps of money to burn, I highly recommend maintaining the cooling system in it's current (standard) form. That means flushing it at least every 12 months. Get a new thermostat and radiator cap - if there is any question about their reliability or operation (it's an inexpensive insurance)
If you do have LPG/dual fuel, and you are concerned about the temps when using LPG make sure that it's tuned correctly. The engine shouldn't run too much hotter if it is tuned correctly. On dual set-ups there is a compromise between the running on petrol and LPG. If the LPG is tuned correctly the petrol running suffers. But let's face it most people use the LPG most of the time so make sure it is tuned to suit the LPG.
I wouldn't be too concerned about the temp gauge until it get very close to the red line. Saying that, mine only gets to just above half.
Good luck - and happy spending

is this the all heads kit? another 6 small coolant lines and re plumb it into the top radiator pipe? im very intersted in this modjessie928 wrote:did you drill above the exhaust port on each cyl?td lux wrote:my tb42e turbo never gets past halfway even after a good thrashing, i have a 4.8L radiator on it and each cylinder is individually water cooled (to stop blockages etc.)

yeah i dont know who else does it, but its a very good MOD, it basically gets the water quickly out of the hottest / steamiest part of the head.waandy wrote:is this the all heads kit? another 6 small coolant lines and re plumb it into the top radiator pipe? im very intersted in this modjessie928 wrote:did you drill above the exhaust port on each cyl?td lux wrote:my tb42e turbo never gets past halfway even after a good thrashing, i have a 4.8L radiator on it and each cylinder is individually water cooled (to stop blockages etc.)

I agree, there are no normal conditions where a TB42 should have erratic temps. It should climb to operating temp quickly and then sit there like a rock imho. The stock cooling system is well up to the task of cooling the engine even when it's working hard. You shouldn't need any modifications.chpd80 wrote:mine will only get to half no matter how hard you push it.
Have heard they are tricky to bleed all the air out of the system.
Heads being weak on them or needing extra cooling is a crock, people just don't maintain their cooling system properly. Just my opinion.
This is not legal advice.
what is it worth? im very keen on the idea of it, wouldnt mind getting that, electronic egnition and a nice new set of claws before i put all my pennies towards my house, and just plod along with the barworkjessie928 wrote:yeah i dont know who else does it, but its a very good MOD, it basically gets the water quickly out of the hottest / steamiest part of the head.waandy wrote:is this the all heads kit? another 6 small coolant lines and re plumb it into the top radiator pipe? im very intersted in this modjessie928 wrote:did you drill above the exhaust port on each cyl?td lux wrote:my tb42e turbo never gets past halfway even after a good thrashing, i have a 4.8L radiator on it and each cylinder is individually water cooled (to stop blockages etc.)

i dont know how much you woudl get it done for but it basically invlves drilling 6 holes, taping them with a thread putting 6x 2 incgh ( roughly) long threaded pipes into the head and connecting all 6 into a manifold of sorts and dumping the lot back into the top radiator hose.
if you are neglect the state of tune in your lpg 4wd ( like most people ) its worth it.
electronic ignition is DEFINATLY worth it.
along with the electronic ignition, get your dizzy regraphed for a LPG advance curve.
if your really keen, rip your head off and shave the sucker RIGHT down till there is only a single shave left in it.
this will do wonders to both your LPG performance /economy and the temp of the engine.

My tb42, runs at a little under a quater 99% of the time, occasionally gets to about half after flogging it up long hills running lpg and 35's, but viscous fan locks up and temp falls quickly. HD 4 core radiator, bleed off ports in head, good quality coolant, good clean cool sorce for air intake and good hoses make the difference. Also if u have a/c made sure the condensor does not have blocked fins restricting airflow to radiator.
lpg is high octane, it likes more compression and is MUCH more efficient with a higher compression ratio.waandy wrote:how does shaving the head make it run ccoler and de-crease lpg consumption? if i shave it can i still run petrol on the weekend trips?jessie928 wrote:i dont know how much you woudl get it done for but it basically invlves drilling 6 holes, taping them with a thread putting 6x 2 incgh ( roughly) long threaded pipes into the head and connecting all 6 into a manifold of sorts and dumping the lot back into the top radiator hose.

depending how much you shave, you can just run higher octane fuel on the weekends so you dont have pinging ( thats what i do)
