3RZ rear main leak

Post by smaddock »

Went wheeling in Morwell last weekend, playing in a bit of mud, 4runner with the 3rz went well, wasn't over-revved or anything like that. On monday gave it a wash, including a pressure clean of the engine bay and the undercarriage, and have noticed in the last couple of days I've got oil leaking from the bottom of the bellhousing that it wasn't doing beforehand. Looks like it might be from the rear main or something, haven't taken anything apart yet. But it's definately not leaking down from the top of the engine anywhere.

Would the wheeling have caused this somehow? Or maybe the pressure cleaning? It is the first mud outing since the engine conversion so not sure what the 3rz's are like with regards to rear mains issues or anything...

mine have never had this problem, first one i did i did not change the rear main on, the engine had 191 tho on it when installed. how deep was the mud u got into? Did u replace the rearman b4 installation? If so, u may have not got it square? or not in far enough? Gen toyota seal?
Does it smell like engine oil or gearbox?
How much does it appear to be leaking?

The mud was only at max 2 foot deep, not sure how high it came up coz the tyres spread it everywhere anyway...

The engine had 155k kms on it when installed a year ago, and was bone-dry, not a leak at all, and up until a few days ago was the same. Its now done about 185k kms.

It definitely looks like engine oil. Doesn't have a smell to it, and I'm assuming the gearbox oil would stink coz I haven't changed it for a while... oops. How much is it loosing? Good question. I wiped the bottom of the bellhousing dry last night, then let it idle for 5 mins this morning and there were drips about to fall onto the driveway again. Doesn't appear to be too much, but its enough that after any drive there are several drips and the area is very moist.

My front main in my 3RZ is leaking from driving in mud. Must have got into the lip of the seal.

I will get to it one day.
