damn its hard to get good help! I want to put new front speakers into the gq. The mq was no problem, just bought the kenwood system and put them straight in. I sold it with the speakes in but pulled out the amp, stacker and head unit. head unit & stacker is in the mav, but i want to put the amp & speaks in, but do you thunk any stereo mobs have a clue uh ah. USELESS. Some say you don't need spacers, some say you do. Some say the kenwood speakers are the shallowest of them all. I don't particulary want to use spacers. Anyone with experiences with this? Don't worry about back yet as it is probably getting the chop chop
in order to fit my 6" pioneer splits i had to use 30mm spaces and trim the hand rest with the power window button in order to fit them, its a dodgy job at the moment but i plan on fixing it up.
Yeah the stock speakers are very thin - in fact thinner than they need to be.
In case it's of interest i just fitted a set of Kenwood KFC-1379ie speakers which are 5 1/4" (130mm) diameter and 46mm deep. This was possible without any spacers; only difference from the stock speakers is that I mounted these on top of the door trim, rather than under it.
I think 6" would be fine but these tend to want to go deeper.
The Kenwoods are good, better than the Sony's I looked at for the same price and similar dimensions which were less well constructed.
the only problem i find now with my front speakers is that i am constantly granding my knucles off on the speaker grill when i am not careful when winding the windows up or down

What do people do when they get water & crud everywhere and kill their speakers? Or do u just not drive water or mud....
When i get my lux im thinking about putting 4" splits in the front, and then mounting 6x9's under the back window in custom boxes, and if i run a sub mounting the amp behnind the rear seats aswell.
Friend of mine has pioneer 6x9's mounted in his rear doors in his pajero, said he just had to cut the internal door frame a bit to fit the magnet in, and that was it.. sounds prety good too
redrover: check out the forums at http://www.overclockers.com.au, they have a dedicated motoring and hifi forums were u can ask all about car audio stuff, plenty of knowledge there for you.
i only put in reasonably cheap speakers...... got them on sale for $50 down from 89 2 way kenwoods, and 2 way blaupunkt for the back at work for 30 downfrom 80...... so i'm not really worried, the headunit, well, if the water and mud get to there, i'm pretty farked anyway, and my sub has its amp attached to it, so its a bit higher up in the back of my shorty

If you don't care about sound the cheapest shyt you want to put in it. The shallow thing is a worry. Basic physics dictates to create a sound wave in the lower frequency's you need one the cone size and two the throw and three the power behind the cone that damps extremely well ie stops the cone vibrating to offer clean crisp sound wave and on top of that dynamic enough to transition into producing other waves within the frequency range your driver is rated too.
So shallow means small magnet (fark all damping), Small throw (no ability to produce bass). Too cures is to fit a Woofer (the whole reason for the woofer craze shyt 2-way 3-way combo) and or an amp that throws decent continuos power into 4 ohms. Hard to get one that does (cheap) and thats why alot of guys in comps used capacitors to offer instant stored grunt over short periods of peak power demand.
When its all said and done something like a Kef 2way is perfect but huge.
Expensive but excellent sound. If you don't care any crap speaker in the 60-100 a pair range will do. Mud and gunk in your speakers mmmm well in my hilux I had a fibro board made up and mounted the amp on that which was then attached to the rear seat about two thirds up and the stacker mounted in the centre console head unit in its normal space but you could quite easily have it in a centre console. The console's are made to order so you can just organise the demensions you need a little extra cost and it is all as high as you would want it.
Now if you get you speakers wet who gives a shyt there are several much more expensive components of the running gear on a truck that if you were in water long enough to get your speakers wet then you were in there long enough to fark up the running gear......

Ive got 8inch 3 way in the back doors and 2 8 inch subs in the rear quarters and 6 inch splits in the front doors. Made custom panels for the back doors.
i had pioneer 6 inch's in my front doors fitted with out any spacers and i put 6x9s in the rear doors of the cargo area, also fitted without spacers although i did have to mount them vertically as apposed to horizontal
I used some 6" JVC 2 or 3 ways ( cant remember). They bolted straight into the old speaker hole, i just had to trim a circle into the inner door skin to allow the speaker magnet to slip through. Works great - plenty loud enough for me.
Ive been looking at Marine speakers (water/mud resistance) only due to the invirement they will be thrown into..
