Sway Bar disconnects for 80 series ????????
Looking of information about sway bar disconnects for the 80 series. past posts, manufactureres, DIY success etc etc.

This is a copy of what I posted on another forum, was still sorking out photbucket at the time so the photos are a bit big
Had a bit of time to spare the other day so got onto fixing another of the 80's slight problems, been running around with no swaybars since the lift went in which makes the handling interesting at times!
Knocked up these swaybar disconnects with a bit of assistance on the lathe.
Obviously way too long at the moment but can trim them down when I get home and weld the bottom mounts on. Will disconnect drivers side front and rear leaving the other side fixed and see how things go.
It was pointed out to me later that I should probably have gone mild steel rather than stainless as the stainless may shear, so might have to do it again in a few months time.
Did a bit more work today, fitted the rear swaybar using the disconnects that I made, slight change of plans on the front, will turn up new disonnects when I'm back at work and have access to a lathe again.
The difference with the swaybar back on was noticable before I left my street, handling a lot better now!

Spring extended.
With the spring fully compressed the end of the swaybar just touches the disonnect, so hopefully won't cause any dramas.

Just my 2c - i've never looked into it, but i was always gonna get under a patrol and see what they've got for their in-cab disconnect, and copy or get one out of a wreck and adapt to my cruiser.
Anyone ever looked into it or done it? in-cab disconnect would be sweet.

My workshop skill doesn't quite extend to a lathe unfortunately. Are you keen to sart prodction?
Spoke a well know re-seller who did not know of any manufacturer (locally) who makes these for the 80 (plenty of GU ones tho). He was interested to know if I found anyone.

Hey, I'm also in need of some swaybar disconnects for 80s diffs. (although they are on a FJ40)
The one thing that bugs me is with the setup on the rear of the 80s, when you disconnect the swaybar, the end of it is just flopping around waiting to smack into anything that's in it's way!
Does anyone know of any good substitute that can be mounted to the chassis, with the disconnects on the diff housing, so you can disconnect both sides and tie it up out of harms way when off road?

G'Day, as for the length I was advised to pretty much just make them so that he swaybar sits flat, so I just fitted them and cut them at what seemed like a good length, swaybar needs to end up at about the same angle as standard so that everything will line up. As for going into production i actually work on a ship and am only there for 6 months of the year but any local engineering shop should be able to do this very quicklyslyder wrote:Tas80 - Looks good. Same thing worries me with the end loose, have actually done the front swaybar a bit differently, made disconnect for both sides using the same design, and where the swaybar mounts to the diff with 2 10mm bolts, I have replaced these bolts with 2 10mm pins, the same style as the ones pictured on my rear disconnect, undo 4 pins and the front swaybar is gone!!ShortAss40 wrote:Hey, I'm also in need of some swaybar disconnects for 80s diffs. You can see the rear end of the swaybar just uses a pinned disconnect on both sides the same as shown in the other pics. The front bolt has just been replaced with an equivelant sized pin.
