Tow Rig - Opinions Please
Hi all,
I chasing a tow rig so i can take to the hilux with the grinder and welder and not have to worry about the boys in blue.
I picked an '07-'08 model 70 series single cab cruiser as my first choice, but yesterday was knocked back by my employer (i will be leasing through my workplace) becuase of the tax implications regarding payload (singl cab, tray etc etc).
So im asking for some input/advice ragarding a tow rig. My next choice is the Toyota Hilux 4x4 dual cab (3.0 TD)
Does anyone have any axperience using this for a tow rig?
Thanks in advance

was thinking about the troopie or the workmate - as ugly as they are. The only problem for me was the V8, bit too big, especially when i add fuel and rego on top of that.
what else is recommended for towing? and is there anything aside from the size if the 3.0 TD motor in the hilux that makes it a bad pick for towing?
thanks

does it need to be a 4by? what kind of total weight, trailer and hilux are you planning to tow?
What are the tax implications of having it as a 1 tonner through work? they are the most tax effective things! thats alot of the reason people have 1 tonne vans or utes throught work cause they are fringe tax free.

Towing Capacity is going to kill you on the hilux. Max is 2250kg. Your going to really struggle to get under 2250 with a car trailer and a 4wd hilux on it.mhanger wrote:and is there anything aside from the size if the 3.0 TD motor in the hilux that makes it a bad pick for towing?

i tow a work tralier thats 1.1 ton every day with a 3ltd hilux and you really have to flogg it to get any where and as for economy forget it, with no trailer im getting 600klms per 70l of diesel/ with trailer 450klms max, i cant wait to buy a v8 cruiser , if it were me i would be trying to get the cruiser

come on move over and let the 75 through
using 30 % more fuel when towing more than a tonne is not not bad at all. I dont know of many cars which would use much less than 15L/100 towing. mabye a little but not much.75 cruser wrote:i tow a work tralier thats 1.1 ton every day with a 3ltd hilux and you really have to flogg it to get any where and as for economy forget it, with no trailer im getting 600klms per 70l of diesel/ with trailer 450klms max, i cant wait to buy a v8 cruiser , if it were me i would be trying to get the cruiser

but yeah your going to need more like 3t tow capacity which is going to cut down your options.

thanks for all the input, much appreciated.
Been looking at the hilux and i agree with the lot of you, ill be struggling to get around with a car trailer.
Ill be towing my hilux, so it wont weigh a rediculous amount, but i might still be better off with a cruiser. As for my employer, im a consulting engineer so a lease vehicle they expected me to get was holden or ford sedan. The problem they had with the single cab 70 series was more to do with not having a 5 seater capacity i still dont understand why this is an issues but i guess i cant do much. The car has to be brand new too, so i guess my only other option is troopy or work mate with the V8, ill just be paying out the arse for it.
How much are F-trucks? and are they reliable? i really enjoy the reliability i get from toyota......
thanks again,
Mitch

does it need to be a daily as well ???
i recently picked up a mazda t3500 for 2500 has a 5m tray was a bit slugish but the t 28 sure sorted that currently building a new beaver tray for it it has a 7 tone gvm but you could down grade some thing like this to drive on a car lisence and still put a hilux on and be under weight
in my opinion is 10 times eaiser than a trailer as long as you can store it and you dont need it as a daily
this is only my opinion guys so dont crusify me lol

lol no ones going to crucify u haha. thanks heaps for the input.
Something big was definitly my first thought, even before my office offered to get a car for me, but unfortunately it does have to be a daily and be new if iwant it through work. Which sucks because a big old truck would do the trick just fine and i wouldnt be paying $60K for it lol
I reckon ill be stuck with either the troopy or workmate.

5 door troopy V8 diesel.
has seating capacity, the towing capacity, its a toyota.
and yes you will be raped on the price.
-i was going to go this way myself. in a similar position to you.
in the end got a car allowance and bought a multi valve 80 series.
not as good as a new troopy, but alot cheaper and i own it.

You cant buy a new F truck anymore. They are no longer brought into the country.mhanger wrote:thanks for all the input, much appreciated.

Your hilux is going to wiegh in excess of 1800kg going on the fact my old one built as light as possible with the components used weighed 1750kg. So your going to need a car trailer that can tow max of 2000kg but only weighs 450kg on its own if you buy the TD hilux. I cant see that happening.
