While doing up the extractors I have broken a stud off in the head, and it wasnt even tight yet mind you . It is also the one closest to the firewall at the top . I have used easyouts before but not in such a prick of a location. It has broken off below the level of the head so welding is not an option. Any other ideas lads? Could I get away with just using some sealant and hoping for the best? I would prefer to do it properly and get it out though...
To be honest, if you can't access it it's going to be a pain. Unless you pul the engine out, or have room to undo the box x-member and engine, then hoist it forward a few inches.
One trick I've had more success with when getting snapped bolts than using Easy Outs, is to use a hole punch and hammer. If you can get the punch on a good angle to hit the bolt in a anti clock direction, you can normally start shifting the bolt in it's thread.
Cheers Nem, I have only just got the motor in and that alone has had its fair share of dramas so pulling it out again is really not an option I think without booking me into the looney bin. I think for now I am going to start soaking with WD40 and tapping with a hammer and punch for a couple of days to try and at least get it a bit looser
Hi Mate ,Have had the same problem before ,I held a nut over the hole where the snapped of stud was and filled it up with weld useing a mig ,took 2 goes but came out in the end .the heat from welding seemed to help loosen it ..Cheers

Thats how we do it at work. Even if the stud is below the surface, if youre careful, build up weld on the end of the stud till its sticking out, then shove a nut over it and weld it to nut.
If you want you can even get freezespray and freeze the stud to shrink it more than the head.
ring a broken bolt guy and make it his problem. will probably cost less than $100 to get it spark eroded or whatever, and will take 15 minutes. he takes the risk, you relax and don't worry about destroying your engine. it's a win win situation.

Same, I had several broken off from a water pump and my own efforts reached a stage where I could see I was possibly going to stuff something up. Called "The Thread Doctor" here in Vic and told him I had busted bolts plus a broken off ezy-out in one of them . He cleaned them all up perfectly in half an hour or so. About a hundred bucks but that was more than one bolt. On the other hand I had the radiator out so it was pretty easy access.
