NC 2.3td...can you put a top mount intercooler off 2.5td on?

NC 2.3td...can you put a top mount intercooler off 2.5td on?
As above...for Gen 1 NC
Can you fit a top mount intercooler off a 2.5tdi motor on to the 2.3td?
Can you fit a top mount intercooler off a 2.5tdi motor on to the 2.3td?
Pretty sure from what I've read that a 2.5 is just an overbored 2.3 so in real terms it should work....would need intercooler & mountings, pipework and bonnet scoop I guess...-Scott- wrote:Well, there's not too many of them here, and fewer people who may have tried what you're considering.
Have you visited a wrecker or an engine importer, to see if you can get a look at both engines?
and yeah guess not too many gen 1's left that have been cared for, gen 2 seems to be the most popular by far
I have a Gen 1 Paj ... however the 2.3 Is a rare motor for Paj's ... most of your OZ ones where fitted with the 2.6 petrol ... and most imports had the 2.5TD rather than your 2.3.Havabigjuan wrote:Pretty sure from what I've read that a 2.5 is just an overbored 2.3 so in real terms it should work....would need intercooler & mountings, pipework and bonnet scoop I guess...-Scott- wrote:Well, there's not too many of them here, and fewer people who may have tried what you're considering.

Here in New Zealand Ive only *ever* seen one 2.3 Gen 1 Paj, most of ours are a 50/50 split of 3.0 V6 or 2.5TD ones ... even the 2.6 Astron powered Gen 1 are hard to find and Ive acually seen more 2.0 Turbo petrol shorties than 2.3's
Not only do you drive an endangered species but you have one of the rarer versions too
In part answer to your question .. im about to mount a Intercooler onto my 2.5 (when it ever stop frigging raining) Mine was missing a couple of mounting brackets so will have to make some up ... im pretty sure you will be able to adapt the 2.5 intercooler easly if it isnt already a straight bolt in job

LOL that they have.... that they have.Havabigjuan wrote:
I like it though, has character
also totally underrated off road too, if your lucky enough to get one with the rear LSD you'l be surprised where they go, My old girl shows up far more modern trucks all the time, and with a set of 31 muddies and the 9000lb warn im not in the slightest bit worried about tackling some of the really rough stuff.

yes, I am lucky enough to own one of the last of the gen 1's (NG TD intercooled with rear LSD and coils, plus the intercooler bonnet ) Having owned both the 4D55 2.3L and the 4D56 2.5L, I cant see why an intercooler wouldn't fit. Then again, why would you want to fit an intercooler? The engine is a slug to drive, and it will most likely remain that way with an intercooler fitted. Why not just fit a 2.25" exhaust and/or get a good tune up? I will never forget my fuel economy driving east over the Nullarbor Plain in 2002- 7.8 Litres per 100km , no car I have ever owned has even come close to that!
1990 NG Paj TDI: 2.5 exhaust, 146l Longranger tank, snorkel, 2" suspension lift, 31" Bighorns.
1985 Holden Drover: 2" OME suspension & shocks, extractors, 2" exhaust, 235/75 MTR's

so the intercooler will offer the engine no benefits, performance or not?Sammyboy wrote:yes, I am lucky enough to own one of the last of the gen 1's (NG TD intercooled with rear LSD and coils, plus the intercooler bonnet ) Having owned both the 4D55 2.3L and the 4D56 2.5L, I cant see why an intercooler wouldn't fit. was already thinking, if I purchase the vehicle, about exhaust
7.8L/100 was from your current ride?
owner of the 2.3 says to expect 11ish/100 open road
again not sure about the 2.3 but the intercooler gives the 2.5 about 40 Nm more tourqe and from memory only about 8-10 more Kw ... not a great improvement in the grand scheme of things although the extra tourqe's handy.Havabigjuan wrote:so the intercooler will offer the engine no benefits, performance or not?Sammyboy wrote:yes, I am lucky enough to own one of the last of the gen 1's (NG TD intercooled with rear LSD and coils, plus the intercooler bonnet ) Having owned both the 4D55 2.3L and the 4D56 2.5L, I cant see why an intercooler wouldn't fit. Doing the exhaust will defiantly help with a diesel, along with making sure the oil is good (yould be surprised at how much better a mitsi goes with a bellyfull of new oil) and the air filter is clean. you can gain a few extra ponies by winding up the wastegate actuator to allow the turbo to boost a few psi more before the wastegate dumps the excess pressure, also if the 2.3 has a ECU valve blocking that off will help too. IF your injectors are in good nick and she's not blowing excessive smoke you can wind up the injector pump screw 1/4 turn or so, that can make some differance too.
Be aware though the 2.3/2.5 TD motors ARE slugs, the Paj is a pretty heavy old girl and really needed a 2.8 from the start, ive driven 10 or so Gen 1 now (mainly to see how they compare to mine) and they are all the same ... SLOW on acceleration but a decent amount of torque off road. the motors are defiantly more suited for off road than on road touring
*edit* 10/11 L per 100K is about right for the 2.5's they are pulling 3000rpm @ 100k's

No it's not my current Paj, the 7.8L/100km is from my first ever NA Paj with the 2.3L 4D55 and 2.25" exhaust. I'm guessing that if you were to sit on 100-110kmh in the little 2.3, you would get around 11L/100km, but the day that I acheived those figures I had the wind behind me, and it was a very calm day, I didn't push it hard, just cruised on about 90kmh. In my current NG Paj with the intercooled 4D56, the 2.5" exhaust and the upgraded fuel pump and 12psi boost, my worst consumption figures ever have been 11.8L/100km and that was driving into a strong wind at about 105kmh. My best ever figures in the NG were 8.5L/100km which was acheived by cruising on about 90kmh on the open road on a calm day. I am currently very happy with my Paj's setup and performance. It was never meant to be a rocket ship (and it still is a bit of a slug) but it just keeps on going and going (especially up steep hills!). It's got 60kw at the wheels and 591nm of torque.

gotta say your current setup is pretty much what I wantSammyboy wrote:No it's not my current Paj, the 7.8L/100km is from my first ever NA Paj with the 2.3L 4D55 and 2.25" exhaust. Well I took a gamble and got a $420 2.5" exhaust fitted (speak to your diesel specialist or exhaust specialist about your application- personally I thought 2.5" was a bit on the big side of things, but it's great) and then I spent $1300 on a dyno tune, fuel pump repairs and upgrade + plus boost was increased from 8psi to 12psi. I wanted a more fuel efficient car (not more powerful) so didn't want to waste my money if my car guzzled more fuel, but it really paid off... it's the best thing i've ever done to my car!
