hilux .. rebuild or new motor ?????
hi ive got an 85 luxy with a 3y motor . my motor is in need of a rebuild but i thought when it was goin that is was quite slow and underpowered . can anyone tell me if the 3y is normally a powerfull motor or should i source a different motor all together . ive looked at dropping in a 308 but i already own another v8 and cant afford 2 8cyl rego . i also have a turbo here off an r32 skyline that im thinking of bolting on my 3y . would that be good enough ?? cheers for any help
the Y series engines are fucking bulletproof, they'll usually go anywhere and for however long, but they make shit all power. Don't expect to go anywhere anytime soon
A turbo *might* work but I doubt it. Would be a LOT of work.
I'd say jsut get a 3rz motor and chuck that in if you were prepared to put a v8 in.
101kw, 2.7L 4cyl (I think thats the power rating).

a good cheap conversion is a 22re out of a celica its pretty easy, belhousing fits engine mounts fit and its injected, buy a celica donor car and u have everything u need for the conversion, even the exhaust bolts up i've been involved in 2 of these conversions lately and they go together piece of piss i can even send u a diagram of how to setup the ecu if u go with it. would be so much easier than a turbo setup

As far as I can see you have two answers to give..
1. How much power do you need?
2. Is it a full rebuild or just the top end..?
If its just the top end and you are kind of happy with the power you could:-
- just do the rebuild about $100 in parts.
- Put a 4y EFI head on more power & efficency $100 + head cost & rewire.
(Both don't need to be certified +++)
Full rebuild I would rip out the 3y & replace with your choice wouldn't go the V8 plenty of other motors out there with more power for your $$$.
(Need to be certified)

Just want to play...........
I have recently rebuilt my 22r and it had same power after rebuild, and then a tiny bit less. i will say it is a bulletproof motor, after 400k, it had hardly any wear but i went ahead and got it all machined anyway. no improvement. i wanted to put a 253 in it then, and have just bought one. i wasted over a grand rebuilding the 22r and wish i hadn't. I would say spend ur money on an upgrade
Sounds odd..omlet wrote:I have recently rebuilt my 22r and it had same power after rebuild, and then a tiny bit less. i will say it is a bulletproof motor, after 400k, it had hardly any wear but i went ahead and got it all machined anyway. no improvement. i wanted to put a 253 in it then, and have just bought one. i wasted over a grand rebuilding the 22r and wish i hadn't. Did you wear the rings in properly and not run it hard early on?
yes i ran it in proper and ran it under load. have a mate done engine reco for years and followed his advice. I think that from the 'unnecessary' machining i got done, (getting head and block machined) the cam timing could not get spot on. It is half a tooth out. along with thaat, i got it bored out 20 thou which increased compression along with getting valves re-seated. might need a bigger carby. not sure. I upgraded the carby to a weber but don't think its a genuine. anyway all that aside, i am over it and want much more power than this will ever give me. When i rebuilt the motor, all it needed was a new set of rings, and valve reseat. I over did it and wish i didn't. bring on the worked 253. the 22r is also heavy on fuel, mor than it was before aswell.
