91 GQ PATROL KNOCKING

Post by christwins »

Hey i have a 91 gq patrol and everytime i go over bumps and stuff i can feel throught the steering wheel and on the floor there there is something loose or like there is something thats gonna fall off from under my car. its a like a knocking vibration feeling and its really annoying cause i have asked heaps of people and they dnt know what it is... Pedders have looked at it and have told me that my wheel bearings need tightening and that my link pins need replacing. now ive replaced my link pins and swaybar bushes front and rear and noise still there. does anyone know what it could be?
cheers

If its worse in wet weather, its almost definitly worn body mounts.

I had both issues - the crack in the firewall (about 20cm long) and worn body mounts.

Or you could get the socket set and spanners and go about undoing the bolts on your steering box slightly and then tightening them again (with epic force...I know I basically swung off mine lol but i'm not overly heavy or overly strong).

That fixed the clunking from the steering in my last GQ (only discovered this AFTER i had replaced the steering damper and rebuilt the swivel hubs  )

A mate had the exact same problem.

If its body mounts when you look up under the car where they meet the body you will see rub marks about 2-3mm around them on the paint where they have rubbed, if its cracked floor you will see a crack where the firewall meets the floor on the seem.

I just had something similar to this, could be what yours is or not.

But the rubber bushes in the radius arm where it connects to the chassis was worn and therefore the it was slapping around when the radius arm moved.

Anyway, good luck :)
