Turbo troubles. Toyota 3B motor

Post by rickybrown »

Ok so i have a Toyota BJ73 MWB with an imported 3B motor in it (same as the 3B with a few difference around oil and fuel) I have bought a TOY3B turbo kit from Denco Diesel. Now after making a plate to change the stud pattern from the import to the correct manifold mounts. and moving the power steering pipes right out of the way to fix it in. I have some issues with oil.

I am taking oil from where the oil pressure sensor is thru a 1/8th bradded pressure line. into the turbo (Schwitzer S1BG) then out of the turbo is a 1/4 pipe going straight down and i have had to bore a hole into the sump as there is no other oil return point. it is 1/4 all the way down to the sump and goes thru a 1/4 banjo fitting.

my problem is that i am getting oil thru the turbo out the exhaust and air inlet.

i sent the turbo back thinking it had a faulty seal but thats not the case. Denco have no idea but to think the oil is not getting away. i have run the truck with the oil going into the oil filler cap. it POURS thru!!! so i do not see how it has any problems going into a 1/4inch banjo.

my thoughts are that i could restrict the oil coming in to the turbo. so instead of the 60 odd PSI try to limit it back to 1/2 that.

any ideas?

i have photos of the install if you want to see them aswell.

cheers.

crankcase breather blocked or incorrectly plumbed?

no breather is nice and clean. have tested this by having the filler cap off.

runs from side top of the rocker cover down to the air inlet on the suck side. have taken pipe off and checked it to make sure it is clear and that there are no blockages both on the pipe and into the cover.

sorry no into the air intake right above the fuel pump. where your butterfly value is to open and close airflow. so when it is sealed the engine is sucking the air thru.

you need to move it to the other side of the turbo, ie into the top of the air cleaner housing, so it is plumbed onto the suck side of the turbo.

I am pretty sure that what is happening is that the turbo is pressurising the crankcase and causing unpredictable oil flow issues.

all turbo's should have an internal restrictor at the bearing, so dont restrict the input

i would definately be changing the fitting going into the sump, it's way too small.
they normally have a 3/4 inch pipe welded into the sump for the drain.
think of it as pouring a 2L coke bottle onto the ground
then pouring the same bottle out through only a 5mm hole.

they are pressure feed through a 1/8 line, but because they gravity drain, they need much more opening to drain from

only rolling element bearing turbos need a restrictor. plane bearings need lots of oil and do not have a restrictor. the denco kits with schwitzer turbos are oil only turbos and need oil flow for cooling.

the drain is on the small side bit it is big enough. it's not a drain line restriction problem - like the man said, he ran it with the return going into the filler cap and it was fine.

Thanks heaps dumbdunce, I got it all sorted now. I had so many issues leading upto it i had 100% forgot about it.

Got it spooling up big time now. It sounds beautiful!

It will get exhaust done Tuesday and then full Tune from Diesel Australia in Slacks Creek QLD on Thursday.

Thanks heaps.
