GEN III into an 80 Series

Post by crankycruiser »

Looks as tho i may of found a cheap gen 3 out of a clubby.

Now wat gremlins are there to watch out for when u put one in a 1fzfe 80 series???

It has extractors on it, can i use them? or do i need custom jobbies??

can i mod the original wiring? or should i just buy a loom already done?

Will the std g box hold up to it? (its a 250 kw motor)

Cheers Ray

Hey mate, have done mine, and worked on several others. The standard 5 speed manual should hold up preety well.
Extractors won't fit. Marks adapaters make block huggers to suit for about $900, good value compared to custom ones.
you will need to mod the a/c bracket so it clears the chassis rail (if you have a/c) I know someone that can do this.
You will need a different sump, can use a corvette one or truck one
can use holden mounts, just have to make some pretty basic right angle brackets off the chassis rails.
or you can use the marks adapters kit to mount and comes with brackets for ac and alt, for around $1600, not a bad kit really.

If you send me your 80 series engine loom and the ls1 loom, i can graft them together and send you back a loom that plugs in, Just have to join one wire and your away. I do these for $650 inc postage

Is a great conversion and well worth the effort, and will use less fuel then the 4.5 as well.

Hrmm so if i bought the mounting kit, got u to mod the loom then i would jsut need extractors and a sump? wats the deal with the sump? wats it get in the way of??

After u mod the loom does that mean all the tacho oil press and temp will all work?

The mounting kit will bolt the engine in and re-locate a/c and alt so it all fits, it also comes with an engine driven radiator fan that adapter to the front of the gen 3. Best bet is to look at marks web site.
I didn't use this when i did mine, just made engine mounts and modded the ac bracket with the grinder, and used electric fans.

You will also need the bellhousing adapter and clutch, radiator pipes, pwr steer pipe, fuel pressure regulator, the 1fz fuel pump will work.

The commodore sump is front drop and will have issues with front diff, the corvette or truck sumps are both rear drop, you can get these off ebay for around $400.

My loom will have all gauges, alt, a/c and starter all working. The tacho will need to be re-calibrated which i can arrange, depending on where i get it done its between $80 and $200.
Cables will need to be lengthened from starter to battery and alternator. (i usually just join a section of the holden cable to the toyota)

You will also need to have security disabled in the computer, i can get this done for $50

Mine is auto so bit hard to really tell, They are not known as a real torquey motor at low revs, But the right exhaust and a good tune can help.
But in saying that mine is still pretty good, only things it lacks is the ability to drop the clutch and accelerate real hard (and brake things)

Im planning on droping an LS2/L76/L98 in a fj45, so will be watching this thread with alot of interest.

Might throw a few questions of my own in this thread rather than starting a new one.

Killalux, could you do a stand-alone loom for a L76/L98? As I would probably just rewire the rest of the car since theres bugger all electrics left after your re-do the engine wiring.

If I dropped the car off to you with engine in, could you do the wiring and get her going? ie, loom, remove security, Ballpark $$, ie trailer in, drive away.

Killalux, if you had the choice again, would you go the auto route, or the 5sp toyota box? Also, would you go a commodore auto, or the toyota auto's?

Hey yes i can do a standalone harness to suit l98/l76.
Yes i could do everything to get it going, would you be looking at getting me to wire the whole truck or just the engine? Just engine and security, battery cables etc prob be around $1200, depends on how much i can get security done for, And as long as you supply all needed wiring harness and computer.

If i did it again i would go with the holden auto, but prob look at the later 4l65e, or have the 4l60e built a bit stronger. Mine is showing signs of slipping. The 5 spped is a good thing, i just prefer to drive auto.
Don't use the toyota auto, I am having lots of drama's with one at the moment making it change gears properly.

The 5 sp cruiser auto is the go, they are a great auto, and easy to modify shift patterns etc as well, or can go full manual.

Personally, I would run a turbo 1fz, less money, less hassle, more power and torque.

There is a GQ shorty around the corner at the exhaust place this week running 6.0 with twin turbo's, I believe.

That would be nice amount of power.

the LS1 is a good engine, i put one into a 75s ute and it flies along, so much so the police have been around to let us know theyll be coming to take it soon if its not toned down :S

i find this hard to believe.. i have spent enuf time frigging with turbo cars to know that it cost a lot of money to set up, esp on a car that u have to build custom everythign for to put a turbo on. I'd rather not be a guinea pig!

Have seen one running on LPG. Has used a vapour injection system (about 4G worth). Not sure how it goes though.

I think marks where looking into doin a kit with all the hoses, etc. Not sure if they have yet though.

DO NOT use the cruiser auto behind the LS1, at this stage it is not possible to make it shift gears properly.

Also the marks adapter loom kit is not direct plug in as i have seen advertised, It is a universal harness. I can graft your cruiser and LS1 harnesses to make it a plug in harness.

As for the V8 versus Turbo debate, I would much rather have a stock engine that holden designed to do 300000 odd km's, Instead of a engine that has been put under more strain then designed for by adding a turbo to it. Sure they may handle the power fine, But for how long.

As for price it cost me just over $7000 to buy and install the LS1 in my 80, Doing ALL the work myself. No way you could rebuild, turbo, add aftermarket ecu, and tune a 4.5L for that money.

Just a follow up. I am putting an LS3 into my 80 series at the moment, and tossing up whether to go for a Walbro 255 lph in tank pump. How are people doing these conversions finding fuel supply with the standard 1FZ fuel pump?

Standard 1FZ pump keeps up fine on an LS1, Not sure about an LS3. I would go the wallbro just to be on the safe side.

I've got a 1hz 80 series that i'm putting an ls1 into, and I have the commo in tank fuel pump. Does anyone know if it'll fit into the tank or if the 1fz pump fits into the diesel tank?
