Australasian Safari

Post by Ruffy »

Less than 4 weeks and i'll be climbing inside a big bird and heading west for the Safari.
Some months ago Muppet asked me if knew any good mechanics that would crew for him at the safari, we couldn't find anyone so i offered to go so that when things did break i could laugh at him.
With a bit of luck and some planning i'll be documenting the event from a service crew perspective rather than a competitor and i'll try to get you some updates.
I believe Krim and Wayne will be tootling over as well... I'm pretty blody excited actually and can't wait.. Sleep deprevation, Crawling around on sand fixing shit the someone else busted is really a favourite hobby of mine so i'll be in my element......

I'm looking at it for next year. Justin said he would let me race a buggy which is sweet, he's just worried about the width as the gates are narrow.

Have fun peoples

Pictures of the cars almost ready to go

Should be a good event. Plenty of excitement amongst the off road racers here in Perth

An issue with the gearbox cooler line to be fixed during the week and the car should go

"lucky" it went now instead of on the first day. Fingers crossed we didnt damage the box as it dumped all its oil

Pictures "race ready"

Quick update,well... where do i start.. Perth.. my first time in perth an it is everything people say it is... WA biggest city and way behind the eastern states!!!

Yesterday was scrutineering and registration.. and a good day for rebuilding shocks.. Thank Cass ;)
And a bit of running around getting last minute things.
Today.. started well.. up at 5.50am and changing my first tyre for the day by 6.30....
Refitted shocks removed yesterday for re-build and a few small trinketty things on the car.. Then off to see Brad at Northern off road somewhere ummm north.. Built a schmiko diff from bits.. raided the dumpster for some old bushes, stupidly let Adrian try to weld some brackety things on the car and off to Gnangarra pines for a quick suspension tune.. ooops... Cass stuck a stick through a side wall when we were roadtesting
Before you know it we need to be back at the bivouac for briefing so we zoom home... Quick briefing (2hrs) then back to camp to remove rocker covers and repair oil leaks... Then.. remove the tyres we fitted to rims yesterday and re-fit the tyres we removed from the rims.. yay.. were nearly finished now.. one to go..
As for the competition, they're all prepared and stuff, so they're sleeping now..
Some nice trucks here and lots of bikes... big expensive bikes...
Hopefully will update tomorrow after prologue...

Krim and wayne destroyed a wheel and tyre.
Disco Was the leader in a prescession when he went passed us
Muppet and alan lost a couple of minutes battling geographic embarresment.
More to come..

Finally got a few minutes to update...
First day went well.. sort of.. car was off song, terra trip did poo poo's, navigator got lost but ended up 2 outright by 19 seconds..
Fuel system is crap, Terra trip porbes are crap, power steering is crap, and the list goes on.. pulled an all nighter, fitted entire new fuel system, pump, lines wiring, relays etc....
Replaced front springs, alter suspension set up, repaired terra trip probe blah blah blah.........
Car was heaps better today but did a couple of tyres and lost some time.. slipped to 5th outright after 3rd SS...
Trying to up load some small vids to PB.. but must be wary of Mount magnet locals who have there eye on my gear.. can't leave it alone and don't have time to sit and watch....

The boys have had enough of blowing tyres so they have bit the bullet and are shelling out some bucks and will be changing over this afternoon. They are carrying 3 spares on the 1st leg today and have the pit crew ready with more spares if required. They just have to keep it together today.....

3 spares is crazy! What tyres are they?

Also whoever shot the video above - watching standing on outside of corners. I've read a few accounts on race dezert where guys got hit. Good vid though.

Truck looks so sweet.

Quick update..
Muppet did really well on first leg today grabbing back two places.. then it all turned to shit.. thermos stopped working and couldn't drive in the dessert due to overheating.. They're still on there way back to bivouac now... Had to cut and run so will be two stages down.

Kriminal and wayne were just heading into service after leg two when we left. They had FOUR flat tyres and had to borrow two tyres from another competitor to get into service. Not sure if they made the cut off for leg 3 or not..

Discokid did a front prop shaft on leg two and was sorting it when we left..

Andy brown was broken down (Unknown) and didn't make the end of leg 2

Tangles conner was going strong..

Des Harrington lost oil pressure..

Lots and lots of punctures... lots.... heaps or bikes an quads had punctures as well....
Big, hard day.. some very fatigued people here at bivouac.

Great 200 km stage today, I think Darren & I came in 4th or 5th on the stage, then stuffed the next one up with a navigational error by me, buggar...
All the time we made up in the previous stage was lost by a stupid mistake, but we finished the stage, and will make ammends tomorrow.
The Hummer is going great now that the stages have opened up and they can use their power, huge truck to get through the tight stuff though.
The support crew had a great stage today, trailer demolition 101, we now have gear being carried by three other teams and Cass is short one trailer, buggar again...
Fair go on the tyres, everyone is getting flats out here, we just need to stay on the track and keep clear of the Mulgar roots.
Fantastic stages, winding through massive orange rock formations and cause of all the rain they have had recently there's a bit of green stuff arouns as well.
We got the Big hurry up and get out of our way by the PWR team yesterday, that was exciting, we were doing about 140 and through the dust we recieved a bit of tap tap, to get us out of the way, I think they helped us hit our top speed for the day.
Droped a few placings today, back to 12th now, so we have allot of work today over the final 2 days.

3 great fast flowing stages today mixed with some tight technical sections . 1 was 250ks, 1 was 126ks and the last one 84ks.
we came 3rd on the second ss just over a minute behind Andy brown , top speed on the stage was 175km/h
We were 5th overall for the day and have moved into 7th place.
