moving fuel tank for longer wheelbase

My Fuel tank has been mounted half above and half below the floor behind the front seats.
Obviously this leaves no room for back seats in the car, and does reduce storage capacity too.
Note: I have an EFI Vitara Fuel tank though - and it's mounting points are all flat, as opposed to a sierra tank that runs on several planes.

Or you could put a body lift in it, then make up some custom mounts and move the tank up 2 inches (you also need to think about how to get the filler hose past the chassis if you do this)...
Or you could do the opposite and restrict how far upwards the rear diff could move. This would be done with bump stops i guess.

my diff is as far back as it can go with the stock fuel tank location
it misses buy about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch
btw if u look under my car from the back (lookin along the bottom of the fuel tank) u cant see the top of the diff. So gregs idea bout puttin in somthin to stop the up travel wouldnt really work unlees u lifted the rig a heap more.

Damo wrote:What are the dimensions of the Vitara tank???
Since i'm already going to be next to the car with a tape measure for redzook, i'll try to remember to measure the tank as well...
I know that it only just fits in behind the chassis rails at the very back of a swb (i.e. where the sierra tank would go), and will only fit where mine is now because of the body lift so it sits just above the chassis (just)...

Quit your sookin'
When mounted accross the car, the measurements are:
(in mm).
750 wide x 450 long x 250 tall (plus vapour bottle and hoses (another 40mm))
There is 150mm above the seam, the 10mm below it.
The seam goes all the way around, and has all the mounting holes in it (2 at the front and 2 at the back, both along the 750mm sides.
The filler hose comes out of one of the 450mm lengths.
Stock colouring is black. But mine look pretty good Olive Drab.
Let me know if you need more info.

one idea, nissan 260c tank, not efi tho, but many floor mounted tanks exist at the wreckers
How is that mounted? How close to the seats is it???
it has straps around it that bolt together at the top. the straps are held to the floor by the brackets that came on the donor car. It probly would not suit a swb, as there is less room behind the seats?? ? but there is many cars with similar type tanks. I real happy with its performance offroad, no horrible bangs, better weight distribution, no more dirt in tank. I had to massage the wheel wells a little, and spaced up the floor brackets a little. christover

Still a relevant idea and question. Then myself and next person who does the search will have the info
Re: moving fuel tank for longer wheelbase
I just finished a chassis extension and tank shift on a SWB sierra. Running Feroza rear springs with longer shackles, but its a ute chop, so may have different spacial availabilities to your full body rig.

Yeah thanks Pete. I came to the point where it wasn't going to work with the diff 5" back from stock.
