4.5 Petrol turbo vs 350 chev in 75 ute??? Chipped 4.5??
Howdy - just aquired a 75 ute petty and am considering either 350 chev v8 or turbo the 4.5 - i've tried searcing for turbo 4.5 but no luck.
Just wondering what people have found with either power/$$/hassle???
I've already got a 350 chev engine and what looks like a dellows style kit - tossing up wether or not to put the chev (and deal with all the probs that come with it) or install a turbo and keep the stock motor.
I'm keen for reliability, so that's why i thought a well set up turbo might be better as it retains the standard motor and accessories.
Your thoughts??

A turbo won't cost much if you only want to produce as much power as the chev! (assuming engine is in decent condition)
If you want to make big power consider the cost of injectors and computer on top of manifold/s, turbo, intercooler, exhaust etc.
I'd definitely turbocharge the 1FZ if the only other option was a crusty old chev.

4.5 engine has 300,000 on the clock, runs beautifully ( goes as good or better than our 55,000km 100 series on 33's, and the ute is on 35's)
If a mild turbo will equal the power of a 350 chev for similar $$ than it may well be the go - i like the idea of std motor/accessory bracketry.

are some figures i was given so turboing the 1fefz should you would think get similar figures ...and be achievable with a relitively mild turbo for reliability.....but the chevs advantage it would seem has its grunt lower on the rev range which would be an advantage in the bush particurlarly as your spinning those 35s some good news for you the chev retains the stock ac , power steer and alternator spots for the conversion iam looking at the same conversion for my troopy chev replacing tired 3f so its a no brainer for me .....but you have the 1fefz a much better donk so it would warrant some costing v drivability v power thinking

AXT down VIC quoted me $7500 for the complete turbo kit ($8500 installed) on thier own cruiser the figures were 101kw to 148kw, and 731Nm to 1142Nm. I really can't afford that, maybe a non-intercooled setup would be a fair bit cheaper??
I already have a stock NA 350 chev engine with straight gas setup, but have been there before (chev into 45 - overheating/oil leaks/exhaust leaks etc) and am tossing up reliability vs power vs hassles - i don't need it to do burnouts (would be fun though).
I've got to put it back on 31's for a blue slip, so another train of thought is to see how it goes on 31's, (as it already goes ok now) and if it's enough power than change diff ratios to suit 35's and just be happy with that.
I think diff gears are roughly $350-400 per end + install (haven't looked into it yet) so for about $1000 i could do that, spend cash elsewhere and retain all stock gear under the bonnet.

If you cant afford the AXT quote, I wouldnt go with either option, because a realistic $10k either way is what you will spend in the end for the right reliable power set up.
If your budget isnt realistic, you will have problems, just like the 45 really.
1fz should make 150 rw kw non intercooled, and be about the same fuel usage as a standard unit, unless you use the extra horses, in which case you have to feed them.
With intercooler, a piggy back on the computer, [Xede] injectors, for your model 75, exhaust, platinum plugs, you should see over 200 rw kw at 10 psi of boost.
Some extra cam mods, and clean up the ports, run 16-18 psi boost, should see 260+ rw kw.
The 4.5 will make cheaper power more fuel efficently than a 350.

Now i'm thinking spring over, rear locker, diff ratios to siut 35's and be done with it.
The 4.5 already got extractors and couple of hot dogs, sounds tough enough as is, so best bet is prob leave it and focus on other areas.

The 2 weak points in the 1FZ are the head gasket and torque to yield head bolts - and to cover this, Cometic now do a multilayer steel item, and Supra 2JZ head studs from ARP are a direct swap. (I can also tell you that the std conrods fail at approx 800hp )
If you did everything yourself you could get it up and running for less than $5K, but you'll need a reasonable amount of skills to pull it off.
If you want any additinal info on what to buy and where, as well any extra pointers on turboing 1FZs drop me a PM.
