Coil Conversion on a 40 series ?

Post by SteelArt »

Has anyone done a coil conversion on a 40 ?

Thinking might be a good idea to get some flex and ride comfort.

Or am I better just getting some coil overs like kings or fox etc ?

Haven't you already decided on a coil over conversion and already purchased 14" fronts and 12" rears?

Yes and no..

Yes I have 14" and 12" Coil overs and yes my current intention is to put them on my 40. I actually bought the coil overs off an Outers Member.

No I haven't decided exactly what I am going to do. You see it appears that the coil overs will not fit inside a 40 series without substantial cutting of the front guards which isn't a problem, BUT cutting a big ass hole in the back of a rust free 40 series body takes some consideration.
The links will also fowl the fuel tank.

What I am trying to find is hopefully someone who has actually done it in Australia as from experience a lot of the USA Guys who do mods don't actually use their rigs on the roads as a daily driver and their engineering rules are somewhat more relaxed than ours.

So there you have it, the coil overs will see the 40 getting some cutting where as the Coils and Shocks will require significant less cutting but will probably have less wheel travel.

So anyone done it ?

hehe yeah no probs.

Going to use 40 series Diffs as I have enough width as it is with the 15x10" rims.

Looked at going 80 series gear but hit the wall with the idea as I couldn't justify the $$$ if I was just going to end up with a 40 on stock 80's gear.

At least with coil overs and custom link it will be different

yeah it is much more common on 80 diffs.
but it allows you more width, better braking, larger CVs i believe.

i dont see how you will fit a coil on the outside of the front chassis rail using 40 diffs?
room will be more then tight.
on the inside isnt really practical, either is underneath?

Yeah I dont think you'll get away with an effective coil over or even a coil conversion using 40 housings. They are just way too narrow. Since you have to fab mounts to the housing in either case, why not just buy a couple of 60 housings (usually found cheap) and fab the mounts to them instead?

hehe, yeah I know I am selling them as I was going to use them.

Reason i am not going 60's or 80's axles is that I do not want the width. I am not building a comp truck and do not want my wheels hanging outside my guards.

I currently have 15 x 10" with 3/1/2 " backspace running 35 x 12.5 x 15 MTZ's , these tyres have been approved and if I changed diff widths this would effect the approved track width and creat issues.

When I was looking at going 60's or 80's I was planning on getting new tyres but the ones I have are brand new and would loose to much $$$.

So 60's are only 50mm wider over 40's anyway so I don't see that making bugger all difference to the link setup.

I have pretty much accepted I am going to have to remove the tank and cut the front inner guards out. In the back I still don't know...

This is what I am aiming at ..

Its actually an 80 series diff based on his build thread on IH8MUD. BUT it would be WAY to wide for QLD roads.

Also hase like 8" lift and 37" tyres... but it looks cool

you can buy fibreglass guards that are wider than standard... would solve the wheels hanging out issue. and more width is always good...

Yeah but to much width looks stupid IMO.

I am very keen to keep it in what I can proportion.

Cheers.
