3 Inch Suspension Lift
3 Inch Suspension Lift
I have a GQ Patrol wagon that I want to lift 3 inches. I have been getting conflicting information from a few people, some say I will have to get new panhard rods because the factory ones are too short while others are saying only castor correction bushes are needed. I will be getting heavy duty King springs, Rancho RS5000's and a Toughdog steering damper and if I have to get panhard rods I will also, but do I need them Any help would be appreciated thanks, Aazz.
Have 3 inch springs under Dad's GQ, stock panhard rods. Only thing is the tyre sticks out slightly more on the drivers side, not enough to worry about. When we end up getting H/D panhards will go adjustable then.

Re: 3 Inch Suspension Lift
Can you still get Rancho 5000's? Thought they stopped makin them yonks ago
anyway I had the TJM 3inch kit in mine, just 4 shocks 4 springs, nothin else.

The only thing is that the std panard rods do bend and a strengthened one the right length would be more suitable depending on what you are doing with it. I lengthened mine cause it was rubbin more on one side, BUT BUT BUT, if you are doing a castor adjustment on the front, why not the back. What will happen is the back coils will bow out when you lift it most likely rubbing on the shocks on flex. As you lift it the pinion will roll upwards so you need to shorten the top arms or lengthen the bottom ones to roll it back around again. It will make the coil stand straight up and down again, which also means it will work better. . MIne also had shocking vibration & it is a LWB. Rotating the dif around got rid of it and put some angle back on the uni's because when the dif rolled up with the 3 inch lift it made the shaft too straight to the flanges.
It is only my opinion
Hope it helps

Sounds like you had a few unusual probs with your lift.
Agree that HD aftermarket adjustable panhards are the best solution but for a sub 4" lift their requirement is borderline. Mainly required for strength not geometry issues.
4" is a bugger for castor correction because it is right in-between needing no correction and going to 5deg plates. The required correction is easily made using bushes, but these rob you of articulation due to binding in the bushes. The other option is going a custom welded rad arm mount on the axle that corrects the castor and retains the standard bushes.
I have run 5-6" lift for the last 8mths with standard rear setup and no such problems. I spaced the lower shock mount about 5mm away from the axle and this corrected the slight spring on shock rubbing. I have since fitted 18mm extended lower arms and this gets the driveline angle perfect. The only reason I went to the longer arms was so that the 36s would clear the front of the rear arches better. I wouldn't worry about the pinion angle for a 3-4" lift.
Yep that's the thing with patrol's, some do it some don't. Don't ask why it was so cause I don't know. MMMMM i would love to run 36's if I could but the police luv the big tyres up here. There is a big blitz about to happen, especially in the Brisbane area. I don't even run the 35's on road anymore. It's pretty sad. If I wanna use them I take them with me but soon getting sic of that so the claws will probably be sold shortly. BUGGER

There's a big blitz about to happen? On big tyres? Is there?
This is not legal advice.
Apparently so, you know what its like believe nothing that you hear & half of what you see, but I'll take it on board anyway. I know a few that have been done on the Northside already. Mainly lookin for 4wd's that look like they breach Dept Transport Regs ie oversize tryes & lift, etc. You know the easy targets with roof lights etc. Who knows maybe it's just scare tatics but that's what i was told, just tryin to help by passin it on. I was tlod by someone in a position to comment, but maybe he could be misinformed.
Thanks

15mm overall diameter from std ie tyre placard. For instance if u had a largest size of 7.50 16 tyre a 32 inch approx then a 33 is illegal, but it depends on the measurement overall. My 285 x75 At's measure 32.5 (despite what it says on the sidewall) which is 825.5mm. Therefore a 750 16 at approx 812mm means a plus of 13.5mm. That's how it reads to me. 32's is a bit tough for a ticket, but it doesn't surprise me. Recently in Redcliffe they have had a number of early morning ie 7.30-8am transport stops pulling them up. MMM i had some looks with the claws on as I turned left at the top of my street and they were to the right. Haven't had the claws on since!!!!!!!!!!! 315 x 75 x 16 no good as they are 34.6 inchs, but i think a lot of it is how the car looks. I have taken all the stickers off the windows etc. It's a palin jane with a 3 inch lift no body lift so it looks somewhat like a family hack.
I don't think you can get certification for tyres, well thats what they said when i saw them about it anyway, but it depends on who you talk to down there i guess. Pity

32s on a GQ!!! You have got to be kidding. This is a factory option size!
sometimes they will defect an engineered truck just to force it in for inspection to make sure the RTA records still match the engineering paperwork. if it is all legit it costs you nothing.

Okies. Good to get the heads up so that I can warn the better half in case she gets pulled over.
