Newbie with a Hilux project... 7M GTE on to 4x4 box????

Post by jono fd3 »

Hello to all you guys out there!!
I'm Jonathan from sunny old west wales (UK) not sure how many people know of the place??

But anyway, on to the project!
I've got a Mk3 hilux running the feeble 2.2 4Y engine. i've got a load of work to do to it ove the next few months:

Body lift
suspention lift
body repair
rear diff seals & bairings
prop UJ
Wide arch body kit
and hopefuly a 7M GTE engine conversion.... this is the one I need your advice on! Basicaly I have a complet Mk 3 Supra as a doaner car, but idealy I would like to keep the 4x4 system as I do go off road and tow a car transporter now and again! So basicaly is there a toyota 4x4 box that will bolt on to the 7M?? I have been told that the 4 runner (Surf) 3.0 turbo diesel box will go straight on??

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

The surf box (R150F or R151F) will bolt up to the 7M and will be strong enough for the 7M-GTE but you'll need a bellhousing from a supra with an R series gearbox.. Not the W series.
I'm told the input shaft is shorter in the 4x4 box so either swap input shafts or get the bellhousing machined down to suit!

Both boxes are manual, but one has a shorter 1st gear than the other.. I'm not sure which one though!!

Is your Hilux Manual? Is your Supra Manual?

You have 2 choices. Either use the R series bellhousing from a Manual Turbo Supra on a surf gearbox and transfer. As stated above.

Or get a 7M non turbo manual W series bellhousing and this will bolt to your existing G52 manual gearbox that is fitted to your hilux. The gearbox is not as strong as the surf gearbox but as long as its not abused it will cope fine. And it will be a much cheaper and easier conversion.

OOooo nice one RUFF, that sounds even better to me ;)
The truck is a manual 5 speed box, but unfortunatly the supra is an auto, but that will be being converted to a manual first before the project gets underway!

So you say a Manual Non Turbo bellhousing will bolt to the hilux box?? is there any machining needed to change the depth of the bellhousing to input shaft, or is it all bolt together & away to go??

Cheers

I'm pretty sure it's a straight forward bolt up.. the clutch slave cylinder is on the opposite side but that's minor.
I've got an 84 4runner which is the same as a Hilux and I have a 7M-GE on the floor which I'm about to start jamming in
Should be a fun project, have heard alot of positive feedback from others who have done it..
Watch out for the head gasket!!

ive got a 7mgte in my bundy, its a monster, i put the r151f in. had the bellhousing machined to suit, 10mm off the front and 5 out the back, all bolts up quite nice then

if you go that way you'll need to run the supra pull type clutch, i modified a few things in there as well cos you loose a lot of room when you shorten it

you could also use the hilux auto as well as it the same family as the supra one

Head gasket is an easy one!! toyota didn't torque them up tight enough.... wack them up to 75lbs and they are bullet proof ;)
