Free Wheeling Hubs Problem

Post by secrt »

I have 96 Landcruiser dx with factory fitted free wheeling hubs, I want to ask a question which has me stumped

When the hubs are disengaged, the front driveshaft should be free spinning? Is this correct?

i.e. what im saying is if the gearbox is in neutral and hubs are in the unlocked position and transfer case in H2, if I get underneath the car I should be able to spin the front driveshaft by hand……

Well apparently not in my case………

here is my problem, with my hubs unlocked and gearbox in neutral and transfer case in H2, my driveshaft wont turn as if the free wheeling hubs are still engaged………

if anyone can shed some light on this issue as to why this is happening, possible causes and how to fix it, that would be greatly appreciated………

for clarity I have checked by raising the front of the vehicle and turning the front wheels, causes the front driveshaft to spin with the hubs unlocked. Its as if the car is acting as a constant 4wd.

Sounds like the hub are not unlocking, do they need to be rotated backwards a bit first to unlock them?

If not they are pretty easy to pull apart and investigate.

if the locking hubs have ben incorrectly assembled or filled with too much grease they may be permanently locked. pull them off and see how you go.

If the cv's have been replaced they may be constant 4wd ones wich could be longer than the part timers, and the locking ring in the hub may not move completely off of the spline.

If the later model FWH are made for this extra length ignore my post.
(can anyone tell me if they are?)

i had a similar problem with my 86 4runner. problem was that when i did the wheel bearings i left the outer gasket off (the star kinda shaped one). so the hubs were disengaging but that few mm less clearance was causing them to stay on.. just.
